A home to friendly weirdos. The Grey Gardens of the Fediverse (but beige). Occasionally graphically cacographic. Definitely probably not a cult (though you'll never be 100% sure). Beige-bless 🙏

I'm alarmed to be learning of #SantaFe city councilors, other high level city leadership, and disability "allies" censoring and excluding the disability community's voice in planning #Disability Community events and collaborations with the #LGBTQIA+ community in Santa Fe.

At a time when our marginalized communities are under attack, only those who are directly affected need to be leading their own survival efforts and celebrations.

Why I Didn’t “Light It Up Blue” for Autism Awareness Day

Today was Autism Awareness Day, and once again, I didn’t “light it up blue.” I won’t do it next year either. Here’s why.

The "Light It Up Blue" campaign is heavily associated with Autism Speaks, an organisation that claims to advocate for autistic people but, in reality, does far more harm than good. Autism Speaks has a long history of treating Autism as a disease that needs to be "cured" rather than an integral part of a person’s identity. Their past campaigns have compared Autism to a tragic epidemic, portraying Autistic people as burdens on their families instead of human beings deserving of respect, inclusion, and support.

For years, Autism Speaks funnelled the majority of its funding into research aimed at eliminating Autism rather than into direct support for Autistic individuals. Even today, despite some surface-level changes, they still do not meaningfully prioritise Autistic voices or support the needs of the community. The organisation has been widely condemned by Autistic self-advocates and disability rights groups, and many of us in the community refuse to support them.

Instead of blue, I stand in solidarity with Autistic people by supporting the #NothingAboutUsWithoutUs movements—because Autism awareness is not enough. We need acceptance, accommodation, and action.

If you want to truly support Autistic people, listen to Autistic voices. Support organisations that actually help Autistic individuals, like the Aspect - Autism Spectrum Australia or local disability support groups. Advocate for accessible workplaces, inclusive schools, and better disability services.

Autistic people don’t need “awareness.” We need understanding, respect, and a society that sees us as valuable, just as we are.

Women With Disabilities Australia (WWDA)Autism Awareness Harms: Why I Don’t Wear my Blue Shirt in April - Women With Disabilities Australia (WWDA)I’m Autistic. From part of the way through grade three to part of the way through grade five, I spent three days a week at a segregated facility, one of the very few Autistics-only schools in Queensland. The school was, and is, run by an organisation called Autism Queensland. I was legally advised not to say that, but I’m not saying it, I’m writing it. (So there.)

Oh look, it's #AutismAcceptanceMonth, or officially #AutismAwarenessMonth but that really means #AutismBewarenessMonth because mostly it's allistic people telling other allistic people to beware of us.

I'm so tired of non-autistic people capitalizing on us and using this month to push their ableism and eugenics. I'm also tired of well-intentioned folks trying to do something helpful but they get it entirely wrong because they didn't even think to ask an autistic person if what they want to say would help. You know what we need for autism awareness? Allistic folks with platforms should lend their platform to autistic folks. No more of Hank Green foolishly promoting ABA because he's totally ignorant about autism and is just doing his job of confidently reading a script someone else wrote about it (as he did last year). I think about what that video might have been like if Hank had just introduced an autistic YouTuber and let them have the stage for 10 minutes, or perhaps had a back-and-forth conversation about the topic.

I wish there were a way to get *any* allistic creator/influencer/celebrity/politician to stand up for autistics the way some straight people stand up for gay and trans rights, the way some white people stand against racism, or the way some men stand up for feminism. But they don't - they just make jokes about us being awkward while autistically-coding fictional characters to make them more interesting and marketable.

This #AutismAcceptanceMonth, I'm lighting up my website and Mastodon server *red* in support of the #RedInstead movement – a movement by and for #ActuallyAutistic people to celebrate #Autism and to counter Autism Speaks' "light it up blue" campaign.

Autism Speaks is a horrible organisation that abuses and speaks over autistic people. Let's counter their blue lights, puzzle pieces, and ableist "defecit" propaganda. #NothingAboutUsWithoutUs!

Recently took the #CPACC exam and just published some notes, reflections, and other tools that I developed when preparing for it.

It includes a Final Reflection, alongside a mini-game that tests all the demographic statistics in the Body of Knowledge, notes on everything including all of the additional readings stuffed into the back of the BoK, and a page with a compilation of all the legislation.

🚨 Disability rights are under attack in 17 states! 🚨

There’s a lawsuit trying to get rid of Section 504, the law that protects disabled people in schools, workplaces, and public spaces. If they succeed, it means:

❌ Schools wouldn’t have to provide accommodations (no extra test time for ADHD, no wheelchair access, no diabetes care in class).
❌ Workplaces wouldn’t have to adjust for disabilities (no remote work, no flexible scheduling, no accessibility requirements).
❌ Public spaces could ignore accessibility needs (buildings, buses, and services wouldn’t have to be usable for disabled people).

📍 These 17 states are trying to gut 504 protections:
Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, Nebraska, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, West Virginia.

If you live in one of these states, contact your state reps & governor! If this lawsuit succeeds, other states could follow, or it could reach the Supreme Court and hurt everyone.
