As a solution for defending Ukraine, Trump proposed voiding NATO. In the case of a Russian-staged provocation, European forces on Ukrainian soil would be seen as aggressors, nullifying the Article 5 guarantee. Since US is not interested in a serious defense alliance in Europe, countries vulnerable to a Russian invasion must create their own, as none of them can defend themselves alone.
