A home to friendly weirdos. The Grey Gardens of the Fediverse (but beige). Occasionally graphically cacographic. Definitely probably not a cult (though you'll never be 100% sure). Beige-bless 🙏

"Some Guys Have All the Luck" is a song written by Jeff Fortgang. It has been a Top 40 hit on the #Billboard Hot 100 twice, as #theOriginal by #ThePersuaders in 1973 reaching No. 39. In 1982 it was covered by #RobertPalmer, which was a hit in the UK peaking at No. 16. Then it was recorded by #RodStewart in 1984 when it hit No. 10 in the U.S. and No. 32 on the Adult Contemporary chart.

Various Artists, Heavy Soul, 1972 on Atlantic

Great compilation of early seventies soul on Atlantic, including luminaries like Aretha Franklin, Sam & Dave, and King Curtis but also some lesser known folks (at least for me), including Dionne Warwick’s sister Dee Dee Warwick (as Dede) and The Beginning of the End – something of a one-hit wonder with “Funky Nassau. “

Love the gatefold image showing just how heavy the soul is. From the days before playlists and music discovery via streaming it was compilations like this that let year hear folks you didn’t already know.

Tracklist:

  • King Floyd – Groove Me
  • Brook Benton – Shoes
  • Little Sister – Somebody’s Watching You
  • Jackie Moore – Precious Precious
  • Wilson Pickett – Don’t Let The Green Grass Fool You
  • Garland Green – Plain and Simple Girl
  • Tyrone Davis – Could I Forget You
  • King Floyd – Baby Let Me Kiss You
  • Aretha Franklin – Bridge Over Troubled Water
  • Wilson Pickett – Don’t Knock My Love – Part 1
  • The Beginning of the End – Funky Nassau – Part 1
  • Dede Warwicke – Suspicious Minds
  • Roberta Flack & Donny Hathaway – You’ve Got a Friend
  • Barbara Lynn – (Until Then) I’ll Suffer
  • The Persuaders – Thin Line Between Love & Hate
  • Clarence Carter – Slipped, Tripped, and Fell in Love
  • Aretha Franklin – Spanish Harlem
  • King Curtis – Changes – Part II
  • Sam & Dave – Don’t Pull Your Love
  • Betty Wright – Clean Up Woman

Caught up on some retro film & TV over Xmas, amazing to see a middle-aged Tony Curtis doing what looks like pretty dangerous stunt work himself! The shots where you can see his face are him, and this is pre-CGI so there aren't any safety wires or crash mats being hidden. Insurance etc would never allow this today 😱

Curtis wasn't particularly known as an action hero, but in his younger days he was in a film about a trapeze artist, perhaps he picked up some skills there and kept in shape?

(This clip is from a series called "The Persuaders" from 1971)

If you want to change your maga relative's mind, read #ThePersuaders . He describes calling in versus calling out. You have to dig down into their fears and find the contradictions that will lead them to question their beliefs. The book explains it much better than I can. Bottom line, labeling them a racist or having a screaming match never changed anyone's mind. #bookstodon
