Something happens to me occasionally, and I don't know where to put it in the ridiculous - infuriating - preposterous feelingspace. It happened again today.

Backstory: I'm an email geek, who has been running mail servers for three decades, and who has written a lot of mail-handling software. I've worked as a consultant on email systems for companies large and small.

When you run your own mailservers, have deep experience with MTAs, and are a bit of a privacy nut, you might have a tendency to want to know exactly who does what with your email address when you give it to them. For most people, this desire is just a dream; it's not possible with their email system.

Thanks to a technique semi-related to #VERP - variable envelope return-path, a mailing list feature with the qmail MTA - it's possible for email geeks. Basically the idea is that you give a different email address to everyone you deal with, and keep track of who you gave it too. Then, when you receive email, you can tell from the address the email was delivered *to* - one of your many addresses - where they got your address from.

Example:

Say I own the `example.net` domain. I arrange for all email to that domain to come to me.

I decide to order something online from #CrappyTire (ask a Canadian). When the Crappy Tire website asks for my email address, I type in "crappytire@example.net".

It was upon my return to Brooklyn that I got the "Card Not Accepted" message. I tried again; same message. I then realized what must have happened—I had maxed out my credit card with the subway ride from my apartment. I then approached the MTA worker at the station for some assistance. I told her, I'm sure you deal with fare evaders all the time, but I'm not one of those. I'm a grown man, a professional with, yes, a maxed-out credit card, but a checking account with thousands of dollars in cash in it. I'm ready to pay my share and ride the train, and you're paid to help people pay for and ride the train. We're a match made in heaven. What do you say?

"I can't help you with your card. Call your bank," she replied.

No problem, right? My functioning debit card is also in my Apple Wallet, and I also paid down my credit card on the Bank of America app then and there. I just need to switch the ole payment method and I should be riding the subway via OMNY to my heart's content…

This is when things got fucking annoying. When I clicked to pay the outstanding charge, the payment method that popped up was my old debit card. Nevermind, I thought, I'll just pay with my actual debit card, or my now-functioning credit card, both of which were listed as payment methods. But when I clicked on the outstanding $2.90 charge, there was only the option to pay with the card that had declined, which got declined because it no longer exists.

The MTA was dead set on getting $2.90 from my old Susan G. Komen Bank of America Debit Card ending in 0114. Any other way, they weren't having it.

It was outside of business hours for OMNY customer service (but within business hours for the subway and bus systems), so I didn't call. I shot over an email and went to sleep, sure that by the morning, I would hear back from OMNY and my transit life would be back on track.

But that morning passed, and so did another, and then another. Life got in the way, and I got used to life with a MetroCard again and resigned myself to forever owing the MTA $2.90. But then I returned from a trip to California, and full of hope, decided to try to use my phone to pay for my AirTrain. Perhaps the passage of time had fixed things. No: "Card Not Accepted," "Card Not Accepted." Enough was enough. OK, you're not getting the $2.90 from the Visa ending in 0114, MTA. That's not happening. You're going to have to accept that the Spirit Airlines Bank of America Free Spirit® Travel More World Elite Mastercard is all we have now.

I finally called OMNY customer service. Sixty people were ahead of me, but I waited, and finally, I got to Levi. "I couldn't explain to you why they made it that way," Levi told me, referring to the inability to switch payment methods on a declined charge, "but that's the system we have to work with."

Three "Your Payment Was Not Successful" emails later, we had done it—we had switched my payment method.

I went to the Parkside Avenue subway station and tapped my phone. It lit up red again. FUCK. But it said "Try Again." So I did. Green. My nightmare was over…

Even as the MTA plans to phase out MetroCards by the end of this year, it's still treating OMNY as if it's a neat experiment, and not a robust system that the entire city of New York is going to need to use to get around. If I've learned anything, it's this: Don't max out your credit card on a subway ride.

@LukefromDC Both #MTA (Maine Turnpike Authority) and #MDOT (Maine Dept of Transportation) have a lot of palms to grease with regards to giving contractors work to build new highways through farms and woods, or develop undeveloped places. The former director of the MTA got in trouble for accepting bribes from contractors. I'm sure the culture hasn't changed though.
