A home to friendly weirdos. The Grey Gardens of the Fediverse (but beige). Occasionally graphically cacographic. Definitely probably not a cult (though you'll never be 100% sure). Beige-bless 🙏

What sets apart the Cascii web-based ASCII diagram editor from similar tools is it manipulates whole shapes, not just individual characters, and can save them for further modification. Plus it's shokingly easy to self-host and run locally.

Puzzling question of the day: why are there two #emojis / #Unicode code points for tickets?

🎟️ "Admission Tickets" ( U+1F39F)
🎫 "Ticket" (U+1F3AB)

The Unicode documentation seems to suggest that "admission tickets" don't refer to unique events, but merely to "access" (like to a museum); whereas "ticket" refers to performances and events.

However, almost all online emoji resource sites claim that "admission tickets" may refer to events, as well.

So: what's the rule, here?

Hey, fedi #Unicode nerds! :boostRequest:

#OpenStreetMap's Andy Mabbett (@Pigsonthewing) is asking whether anyone knows about any instances of the #OrdnanceSurvey's bench mark symbol appearing in actual print, on a page. Looks a bit like ⭱ or ⤒ but a broader arrow. Usually found carved on stone or brick all over the UK/ROI.

Their goal is to propose it as a Unicode symbol! community.openstreetmap.org/t/

Any known international usage of this symbol would doubtless be appreciated too

Unicode pictograms to mark progressively rising values:

For Ace Maths I searched for unicode icons to mark progression: show that you’re getting better. Since I found a lot of different options (from simple sparklines to a huge list of animals), I’m collecting them in this article.

Includes a tip for somewhat better, automatic #unicode "image" suppport #LaTeX with plain #pdflatex / #pdftex

@stuartyeates who is this "we" who is doing the excluding? And as for #Unicode, its scope is encoding plain text. Gestural signs by human bodies are not plain text, so they are out of scope for Unicode. So are smoke signals and bird calls and blues riffs. I don't get why you frame this as exclusion.

It's kinda funny how one person's clever hack (#Unicode ZWJ sequences) can lead to anger and misinformation down the line.

Here, for whatever reason, ZWJ sequences were breaking over on #Threads and users immediately assumed anti-trans malice on the part of the platform.

It's easy to understand WHY someone would assume that in the current climate, but we've got to be careful to rule out other explanations before throwing confident accusations around. (This goes for me, too, btw.)

EDIT: Apparently it was fixed for them at some point. No doubt responded with something along the lines of "they heard our anger and feared us so they restored it!" or some such. ;)

#Unicode is one of those little things in life that I can't help but smile about.

Is it perfect? No, of course not. Is it better than the alternative? Yes, so much so that every time I'm confronted with a long list of character encodings I can choose from, I feel a sense of relief when I find #UTF8 among them.

I wouldn't have thought it possible to standardize a single character encoding for everyone, and yet, somehow, there is just such a standard.
