A home to friendly weirdos. The Grey Gardens of the Fediverse (but beige). Occasionally graphically cacographic. Definitely probably not a cult (though you'll never be 100% sure). Beige-bless 🙏

Big Picture Science for Feb 03, 2025: Coming to Our Animal Senses

REPEAT
Animals experience the world differently. There are insects that can see ultraviolet light, while some snakes can hunt in the dark thanks to their ability to sense infrared. Such differences are not restricted to vision: Elephants can hear subsonic sounds, birds navigate by magnetism, and your dog lives in a world marked by odors. In this episode, we speak to science journalist Ed Yong about how other creatures sense the world. Could we ever understand what it’s like to have the hearing of a bat or the sight of a hawk?

Guest:

* Ed Yong – Science writer for The Atlantic whose coverage of the COVID-19 pandemic earned him a Pulitzer Prize in explanatory journalism. He is the author of, “An Immense World: How Animal Senses Reveal the Hidden Realms Around Us.”

Jewellery & the senses: smell is incredibly important for us, and so it comes as no surprise that it also forms part and parcel of jewellery! Jewellery and scent are closely connected: many jewellery pieces contain fragrance one way or another.

But that aspect is often overlooked, simply because fragrance disappears after some time...so how are we to remember this beautiful capacity of jewellery?

That is the topic of the next installation of my Jewellery & The Senses blog range! After Sight and Touch, this blog dives into the world of Smell!

A quotation from Nietzsche, Friedrich:

«
Lightning and thunder need time, the light of the stars needs time, deeds need time, even after they are done, to be seen and heard.

[Blitz und Donner brauchen Zeit, das Licht der Gestirne braucht Zeit, Thaten brauchen Zeit, auch nachdem sie gethan sind, um gesehen und gehört zu werden.]

I do not do this often, share a list that is.

This is an adventurous list, it is eclectic, yet follows mainly electronic music, some words, but not constantly to my taste.
It a sensory bass heavy playlist. A couple of my tops of tops is on here. Still working on last bit.
Be kind to it, and it will earbang your fillings out with the correct gear.
Suggest skullcandy Crusher Wireless or equal.
Cheers to your ears.

I had 4 days of cold symptoms before losing my sense of taste/smell. I tested negative after 2 days of symptoms but re-tested once I noticed that nothing tasted normal -- positive on day 4.

There isn't anything pleasant about having a sore throat or sniffles. Not having my sense of smell or taste is absolutely miserable though. I sniff the flowers on my morning dog walk. I savor each bite of food when I eat. I cannot live my life fully without these senses. I am bereft.

The concept of #SelfIdentity involves our understanding of who we are in the #society. We need to know the #nature of who we are to believe in ourselves. Our #past #experiences also shaped our #beliefs about our #future, #beliefs and #knowledge of the #world. This can #influence how truly we see ourselves by #person.
