A quotation from Jefferson

If a nation expects to be ignorant and free, in a state of civilization, it expects what never was and never will be. The functionaries of every government have propensities to command at will the liberty and property of their constituents. There is no safe deposit for these but with the people themselves; nor can they be safe with them without information. Where the press is free, and every man able to read, all is safe.

Thomas Jefferson (1743-1826) American political philosopher, polymath, statesman, US President (1801-09)
Letter (1816-01-06) to Charles Yancey

actionnetwork.orgUrge Congress to stop Trump’s information takeover and attacks on the press! Trump’s Federal Communications Commission (FCC) is trying to destroy PBS and NPR and the House GOP has introduced a bill to gut funding for the public broadcasters. FCC Chair Brendan Carr is targeting CBS, NBC, and ABC for so-called “bias against Trump.” Elon Musk and Marjorie Taylor Greene are loudly attacking PBS, NPR, and any media critical of Trump. Trump’s assault on the free press and open internet began in his first term when he relentlessly attacked the media and his admin undid Net Neutrality. Now, we need Congress to use their power to stop Trump’s information takeover. Musk has said he’s “gunning” for public media. He wrote, “Taxpayer money should not be used to fund propaganda” when referring to NPR — straight out of the Trump media playbook. Rep. Greene called for the heads of NPR and PBS to testify in front of her DOGE subcommittee. Trump’s war on the media paired with Musk’s drive to destroy public services is a dangerous combination. Destroying reliable journalism will only give rise to more right-wing propaganda and disinformation. That’s exactly what Musk, Trump, Greene, and the GOP want. These attacks won’t end until Congress takes a stand to protect the free press, public journalism, and open internet access. Sign this petition to urge Congress to stop Trump’s information takeover and attacks on the press!

Really glad to hear that Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty is challenging the termination of its grant under the United States Agency for Global Media.

Also good news that Europe is voicing support for RFE/RL.

"Lipavsky's Polish counterpart, Radek Sikorski, also voiced support for RFE/RL, recalling how his father listened to the station as well as the Voice of America broadcaster during the Cold War.

"'It's how we learned the basic facts about our own countries because communist propaganda was so tightly controlled,' he told reporters. 'And these institutions continue to do similar work for autocracies today.'"

In retaliation for the Associated Press’ refusal to call the Gulf of Mexico to, well, you know, the Trump administration has barred the AP’s reporters from the White House press pool and events.

The AP has been a member of the White House press pool since it was founded in 1846. Having earned the honor of 59 Pulitzer Prizes, the AP is respected for its journalism with a worldwide reach of over 4 billion people per day.

The First Amendment guarantees freedom of the press and the right to free speech. The Fifth Amendment grants due process, and the AP was not given a formal opportunity to challenge the ban before it was implemented.

The AP has sued to regain access, arguing that the administration’s goal is to coerce journalists to use “only government-approved language” in reporting.

join.theintercept.comProtect Freedom of Press. Demand the White House Reinstate The Associated Press Now. One of the very first executive orders signed by President Donald Trump attempts to rename the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America. But under international law, the American government doesn’t have the authority to change the name of the entire Gulf worldwide — and most countries, including Mexico and Cuba, aren’t accepting the name change. Likewise, noting that the area has carried the name the Gulf of Mexico for more than 400 years, The Associated Press decided not to change the name in their reporting. In retaliation, the Trump administration has barred the AP’s reporters from the White House press pool and events. This is an unacceptable attack on freedom of the press, in violation of the First Amendment. The AP has been a member of the White House press pool since it was founded in 1846.
