Part of the area by one of my fave & free & recreation spots in territory. The backroads in both the North & South areas have several fantastic recreational camping sites which are free to stay at - zero amenities so you need to be prepared to pack in what you need & pack it back out. I like the backroads spots better than fully maintained & easier to access sites. I rarely see anyone else near me when camping at backroads sites.

A narrow dirt path leads through dense trees & foliage. A sign reads - No Vehicles Beyond This Point - in the distance. The area is serene with a glimpse of a calm river behind the sign. Black & white photo.

Located on the west coast of Vancouver Island in Ditidaht First Nation’s territory, about 92 kilometres southwest of Port Alberni via the Bamfield Road, the entire headwaters of the Doobah Creek were logged off multiple times — a poor industrial approach which annihilated fish spawning habitat. Forty years later, the Ditidaht people are starting to rebuild.

I’ve had the good fortune to visit the Cheewaht Cedar in Ditidaht territory on Vancouver Island. If this one a hundred kilometres north on Flores Island is properly protected along with its surrounding ecosystem, and all other old growth, I hope to visit it. An ancient wonder. A monument to the permanence of life.
