🌏 Pied butcherbird (Cracticus nigrogularis)

The pied butcherbird is a striking medium-sized black and white bird, with a black hood, white collar, and a strong, hooked grey and black bill. It is found across most of mainland Australia in drier forests, woodlands, and often suburban areas. Pied butcherbirds are known for their beautiful, melodious fluting songs. They are also aggressive predators, feeding on insects, small reptiles, mammals, frogs, and birds, often impaling prey on thorns or forks in branches. They live in pairs or small family groups, holding territories year-round. Two subspecies are recognised.

🌏 Pink robin (Petroica rodinogaster)

The male pink robin (pictured) is a small, but striking, Australian robin, with a bold pink breast, grey-black upperparts, a white forehead spot, and a black bill. Females are duller, grey-brown with a pinkish tinge below and a buff forehead spot. They inhabit cool, temperate forests of southeastern Australia, including Tasmania. Usually seen alone or in pairs, they are shy and forage for insects and spiders in shrubs or on the ground. Their call is a soft, chattering trill.

Conservation status: Least Concern (IUCN 3.1)

🌏 Flame robin (Petroica phoenicea)

The flame robin is a small Australasian robin native to southeastern Australia, including Tasmania. It is known for its vibrant plumage, with males (pictured) having a bright red or orange breast and throat, contrasting with a dark gray or black back. Females are less colourful, sporting a gray-brown plumage. Flame robins inhabit diverse habitats, including forests, woodlands, and mountainous regions. They are insectivorous, feeding primarily on insects and spiders. No subspecies are recognised.

🌏 Western corella (Cacatua pastinator)

The western corella, also known as the western long-billed corella, is a white cockatoo endemic to southwestern Australia. It features a long, pointed bill, a short, erect white crest, and a pinkish patch between the eyes. Its underwings display a pale yellow hue. Western corellas inhabit farmlands and river valleys, often forming large, noisy flocks. Their diet consists primarily of corms and seeds. They can be seen moving between feeding locations, and are well known for their loud calls. Two subspecies are recognised.
