beige.party is one of the many independent Mastodon servers you can use to participate in the fediverse.
A home to friendly weirdos. The Grey Gardens of the Fediverse (but beige). Occasionally graphically cacographic. Definitely probably not a cult (though you'll never be 100% sure). Beige-bless 🙏

Afternoon, all --

My 14-year-old is considering joining Masto and has some pretty specific interests.

Rather than having them go through the wild west of the global Masto feeds to find accounts of interest like I had to -- that was a loooong process for me initially when I joined, when I had to curate a list of follows by checking out random-ass feeds from everyone everywhere, and it was very much

@reay @alcinnz I think the only way to put a child on the Fediverse safely would be an allowlist "island" network for that purpose, where you only federate with servers that are on board with supporting children. writer.oliphant.social/oliphan

Any open federated server could be surprised by a new e.g. Nazi server that hasn't made it onto a block list yet. If you can tolerate an occasional moderation failure like that, then an island may not be necessary, but many parents would find that unacceptable.

The Oliphant · IslandsIslands are opt-in federated networks consisting of a chain of allowlist or "limited federation" servers linked together. Everyone in the...

@skyfaller @alcinnz Read the link and that’s already well over my head, unfortunately.

Are Islands already things I can go investigate?

@reay @alcinnz Yes, the first example is the ION network: codeberg.org/oliphant/islands/

To be a member, a server must federate with all other ION network servers, but can also federate with any other servers that meet their moderation standards. Ask @oliphant if you need help.

There is also an allowlist network run by ex-Cohost users which is currently exclusive, meaning a member server can only federate with other Website League servers. websiteleague.org/
