GIMP 3.0 is released, check it out!
https://www.gimp.org/news/2025/03/16/gimp-3-0-released/
A huge THANK YOU to everyone who contributed in any way - from testing and submitting bug reports through to designing, coding, fixing, packaging, testing some more, translating, documenting, hosting, administration, so many people, so much work, so much to be thankful for!
Welcome to GIMP 3.0!
@GIMP fix the name you cowards
@petrillic They’re proud of it. They think they’re bravely fighting the PC police (I tried to find a term as outdated as their software ). Srsly, there are so many better alternatives now--I can’t imagine why anyone still uses it.
@mjibrower @petrillic “…3.0 is released!”
Me: *checks* *name is still a slur* not interested.
@crowbriarhexe @mjibrower @petrillic so is the word gimp a problem?
@tankgrrl @crowbriarhexe @mjibrower @petrillic ah I see. I may live oversea now but English is still my second language. I actually never heard the word gimp being used in other context other than the software.
@kkavee @tankgrrl @crowbriarhexe @mjibrower @petrillic yup, most people have stopped using ableist slurs, but [edit: a sizeable fraction of] the maintainers of this project take pride in it for some reason
@jackeric @kkavee @tankgrrl @crowbriarhexe @mjibrower @petrillic Do they?
I would think it raised a chuckle once 26 years ago and now it's kept for historic reasons. I thought I find something on the Wikipedia-article about this controversy but there is nothing. Do you have a source please?
@ewerybody
How dare you make sense?!
@jackeric @kkavee @tankgrrl @crowbriarhexe @mjibrower @petrillic
@0xDEADBEEF @ewerybody @kkavee @tankgrrl @crowbriarhexe @mjibrower @petrillic are you folks incapable of reading the link two or three posts upthread

@jackeric @0xDEADBEEF @ewerybody @kkavee @tankgrrl @crowbriarhexe @mjibrower @petrillic
yall are overthinking this lol. its just a word, and it sounds cool too (phonetically)
@pedka oh look, another zero-follower mastodon.social user has chimed in to stan for ableism
@jackeric no i haven't
also grats on your 700 followers. im sure it makes you a much better person than me
@pedka yup, you are, you've logged in to tell us all how a slur is not a slur, because you don't give a fuck about disabled people
@jackeric no i just told you i havent. i wish such words would not exist. disambiguating them like that is a step towards it. its about not giving a fuck about the word, not people. at the end of the day, all words are made up. make up your own, like gimp
@pedka repeating a slur does not disempower it. it does the opposite
and for someone who's apparently so keen to say "all words are made up", you're really bothered by the idea that the Gnu image editor should be named something else
@jackeric because gimp sounds cool phonetically. if thats what you associate gimp with then im sorry. to me gimp is just a 4 letter word associated with an open source graphics program. it crossed your mind, not mine.
call me an ableist, i dont care because i know who i am (not an ableist)
@pedka you are ableist though. you don't get to decide that a word doesn't have the meaning it has
now go, log off this site, and find something more fulfilling to do with your brief life than defend a software project that blatantly does not give a fuck what anyone thinks about it
@jackeric i love when people try to gaslight me into thinking that im someone im not
@pedka you're uncomfortable because you're maybe beginning to understand that your words and actions have consequences
@jackeric you did not just try to gaslight me again. stop it, you wont make me feel bad about it. its just an acronym, and a cool sounding one at that. im not an ableist. if anything, its you who is being judgemental right now
@pedka yeah, it's quite clear that you're proud of being ableist while denying that what you're doing is ableist
@pedka funny how words suddenly have meaning when they're directed at you, isn't it
@jackeric whatever man. this conversation can go forever. you are just trying to make me look bad for no reason.
im defending the word GIMP, the app name. it sounds catchy - its a single syllable word with a punch. and it has its roots in an acronym. it has nothing to do with disabled people like you are trying to make it look. it means nothing. besides that, ever heard of homonyms?
its the end of our conversation. you can assume that you have won. i feel like your ego will like that
@pedka "it has nothing to do with [the slur often used against] disabled people except it sounds the same [and is spelled the same, just capitalised]"
seriously. you joined this conversation. you tried to defend the shitty use of a slur for whatever reason. you've completely failed to do so - just vomited nonsense about words being made up and if you live in your imagination instead of the real world then you can change the meanings of words and remove negative associations. go back to your imaginary world whenever you like.
I'm sure you'll remember your Mastodon password and be back again next time a FOSS project gets criticised
@jackeric im really sorry that you feel this way
@pedka yup, I'm sure you're disappointed I'm not eagerly agreeing with you
@limneticvillains @pedka that's tremendously relevant information for software products exclusively used in Ireland
@jackeric @pedka Glad you appreciate me. You're from Scotland right? You must hear much worse all the time. Gimp is such a mild one, it's not even a very old world when you look into it and there seems to be no root words, it hasn't been around that long.
I think it's a great word to mildly slag off friends with and I don't make the same negative connotation.
Guess some folk are feeling the hyper sensitivity of meanings and musings and have a distinctly broad distaste for many words.
@jackeric @pedka Don't get me wrong, there are some vile words I think are a disgrace to use, ranging from very nasty to downright racist and disgusting, the utterance of these words would make me react and think just as you do here, but perhaps, as the person you're disagreeing with points out, it's just a word and we attribute meanings to them, and maybe the word Gimp has less of a meaning in some places than you give it. Ireland is one example of a place where the word doesn't have much venom
@limneticvillains @pedka I'm pretty tired of weirdos coming out of the woodwork to excuse the inexcusable tbh
@jackeric @pedka How offensive to describe people like that, just because they have a different opinion on language, how mildly fascist of you and puritanical to dictate that certain words are so terrible that you must form an instant opinion on anyone who disagrees with you. Again, where's the line? If I am disabled, am I able to claim the word? Should I call you a weirdo for using the term abilist, which I could deem offensive?
You think the word Gimp is dreadful, others don't.
@jackeric @pedka I think it's very reductionist to blanket anyone who disagrees with you on this particular matter a weirdo or toxic or abilist, you're making an issue of linguistics and language into a black and white good vs evil, your context of what the word means is utterly solidified and there's no room for someone such as myself to point out it is simply not used as an offensive aggressive slur by millions of people, without deciding I or anyone else who uses this word as - bad.
@jackeric @pedka I merely explained that in Ireland it is not used in the offensive way you think, sorry you have no capacity to receive this without jumping to conclusions.
Out of interest, what comedians do you like and how do you navigate the use of slurs in comedy? Are you able to listen to Peter Cook and Dudley Moore? Billy Connelly? Bill Hicks? Richard Pryor? Is everything always so serious and ultra PC? Is there zero room for every word you dislike?
@limneticvillains @pedka bloody hell, you really should have the Wondermark sealion as your profile pic
@limneticvillains actually no
the sealion joins the conversation and then doesn't shut up. I did not invite you or @pedka to speak to me - I have made it clear you're _not_ welcome to do so, and yet you keep harping on about slurs not being slurs if there are points in times and space where the slur has another meaning. I reply when I choose to, but you both are weirdly obsessed with defending this shitty decision by a software project. you can stop at any point and that's the end of it
@jackeric @pedka Oh shit, you didn't invite me to join in on a conversation on a public forum. Fuck man. I am so sorry. I overstepped by merely sharing an opinion, and because I don't find writing and reading an effort, because I find it a pleasure, you've decided I'm hyper invested, you just want to label me and the other dude Nazis and move on, there's a mute function and a block one.
You're a pompous sort Jack.
Farewell. Don't burn any dictionaries or label everyone - a Nazi.
@limneticvillains, I don't think that it's possible to have a meaningful conversation with @jackeric, as his inflated ego seems to make them incapable of acknowledging anything that doesn't originate from his own self-proclaimed genius. I have no fucking clue how did they gather their 700 followers. His inability to listen and consider alternative perspectives, as well as straight up toxic behavior made me quit, and I suggest you do the same. It's just not worth it, he's a lost cause.
@pedka @jackeric I've noticed he has a habit of trying to insult instead of converse, he has already made his mind up on the use of the word and anything other makes those who use it bad people, I know that's his stance.
I would have a similar stance on some words if used by certain people in certain ways. I think it's a shame just pointing out the use of the word by people in a different country is not the same as what he believes it to amount to- that he's unable to process this. Alas.
@limneticvillains @pedka my pronouns are on my bio Pedka. you don't need to use "they"
such "in Hindu tradition it's a symbol of peace!" energy from the both of you
@pedka @jackeric Amusingly, it was the British who tried to and almost completely eradicated the Irish language, (mainly the English) but there were many planters from Scotland, it is slightly ironic that a word that was only invented and used to describe someone limping merely 100 years ago, which has multiple meanings and also a BDSM pulp fiction style sexual one- is such a sticking point for a man from Scotland, a nation historically famed for its bad language.
