I wonder how many #ActuallyAutistic ladies have gone undiagnosed in their lives because they were told good girls don’t make a fuss, so we got really REALLY good at masking
@farah My therapist is pretty convinced that I went undiagnosed because I'm trans and exhibited behaviour patterns in line with female autism.
@farah “That’s not ladylike.”
@farah
Always find it weird that people don't get that society literally insists that girls learn to put up, shut up, smile, be polite, etc. All of them as far as I can tell used as masking .
@farah and how many of us are in pain because of being told from birth that it does'nt hurt ?
Like, "the sun does'nt hurt jour eyes or your head", "noise can't hurt you", "that pill can't give you stomach ache". It's all in your head if you listen to them... Even when you can prove otherwise.
It ends up messing with your pain perception.
@farah (okay, technically non-binary, but for the first 30 years I didn't know there was an alternative that was neither male nor female)
@farah So. Very. Many.
@farah @alexisbushnell Never had a diagnosis, but I think I share a few Nuro spicy traits. I definitely have the super special interests that no one wanted to hear about as I was growing up. And the sensory issues and weird fears that people said I should just get over.
@JessicatheVIArtist @farah I don't have a diagnosis but I'm on the wait list for a full assessment.
Self diagnosis / self-realisation however you want to think of it, is totally valid.
