We were struggling with gaming today because of sleep deprivation, but once we caught our second wind, we decided to attempt to complete the SNES port of Doom.

By all accounts, this was an absolutely awful port, but many of its flaws make it an easier version of the game to complete. We achieved gold by mastering it in roughly 8.5 hours.

I am glad my counterpart helped. He tried to play the game last week, but could not tolerate the controls. He got frustrated and walked away. I've never played Doom before today, so we worked together. I picked up on the controls after about three levels, and he told me where to go. It worked out quite well!

We hope when achievements are available for the PC version, they are more detailed and in greater number. For instance, achievements for beating par on individual levels would be a nice challenge for novice speed runners.

What game will we master next?

@VanessaNightshade

I need to go back to this for the Mastery.
I still need to do the game on Nightmare, which feels like it will be a miserable time.

Perhaps when I have a period where I can't decide what to play next, I will go back to this one, along with a few other things that are shy of the Mastery.

Well done on this achievement!

@ishambard
Thank you. Nightmare isn't so bad on this port. With fewer enemies and no respawning, it's barely more difficult than UV.

The hardest achievement was maxxing out all ammo types. Can't be done in Episode 1, and with so many levels removed, it's nearly impossible in Episode 2. Episode 3 is where it's at. Save as much ammo as you can before entering the secret level, then go from there. That level has a lot of rockets and shells, so just don't use your energy cells and that one will be easy.

@VanessaNightshade

To be honest, yeah the maxed ammo one is definitely the one I can see giving me problems. But as you said, if I can get to Warrens in Episode 3, it should be pretty manageable.

I tried Nightmare shortly after beating the game on UV, but I think i was mentally burnt out on this port, so I moved over to one of the others 😂

@ishambard
We nearly did the same, but then we said "We're so close. Let's just try Episode 1 to see how that goes, and if it's too much, we can try again later".

E1 is moderately challenging on Nightmare. Once we beat it, we realized we still had two hours to kill, so we moved forward.
E2 is a bit rough in the first couple of levels, but after that, it eases up. Having fewer levels helps overall, but the ammo limitations (in part because of deleted content) adds to the challenge. Still, it's easier than E1 overall. After that, we still had an hour to spare, so we pressed forward.
E3, while challenging, wasn't really any more difficult on Nightmare, though M2 is a bit rough.

The game will be there when you're ready for it, but the Nightmare achievements aren't so bad once you've warmed up.
