A home to friendly weirdos. The Grey Gardens of the Fediverse (but beige). Occasionally graphically cacographic. Definitely probably not a cult (though you'll never be 100% sure). Beige-bless 🙏

Autism awareness, autism acceptance…

No one asked autists apparently because I have a pretty solid suspicion that if they did we would be talking about autism *understanding*

@CynAq
.
I mean, would Allism Awareness Month have meant anything to you?
Isn’t the awareness aspect about our OWN neurotype?
.
Are WE Allism Aware? Can WE properly describe one neurotype to someone if we aren’t aware of theirs, what theirs means? Aren’t we trying to explain what Autism is when we don’t know what Allism is? If the people were to be made aware of anything, wouldn’t that be the same as us, a revelation not about other people but about themselves?.
.
It wasn’t some revelation about Allism we all had and it explained everything, it was about what WE are.
.
They don’t know they need it like we do, but I do, or I think it at least. (deleted stuff with all my usual noise about “Human Nature.”)
.
Sigh. I’ve always preferred the impossible over the pointless. 💜
Sorry.

@punishmenthurts this might just be arguing semantics but I think everyone is already aware of the existence of autism. Then the rhetoric jumps to acceptance, insinuating that autism is somehow difficult to accept as an identity or a neurotype.

I think understanding is what’s generally lacking. Comprehension might be another word to describe what I think we need.

My thought process is that awareness is already there, what we need now is understanding or comprehension to clear misconceptions or harmful beliefs etc, which would in my opinion result in acceptance, if it’s still a thing we need at that point.

This is obviously my opinion. It doesn’t make yours any less valid.
