beige.party is one of the many independent Mastodon servers you can use to participate in the fediverse.
A home to friendly weirdos. The Grey Gardens of the Fediverse (but beige). Occasionally graphically cacographic. Definitely probably not a cult (though you'll never be 100% sure). Beige-bless 🙏

I get it, Hergé, I got a little too into nuclear reactors once too...

@theropologist

Strange, middle-of-the-night missives one is left to ponder for their possible, hidden meaning.

@theropologist

This fascinated me as a child. I learned about nuclear processes through tintin and I'm so glad for it. It helped fuel my interest in science.

This scene also helped flesh out and humanise one of the plot's antagonists really well. Just because you are a scientist does not mean you can't do bad things.

@Madagascar_Sky I don't think I read this one as a kid, though the iconic red and white rocket is familiar to me from the pictures of all the book covers that were on the backs of all the books. I went into it expecting some ridiculous 1950s sci fi and when I got to that part I was like, Huh, actually that's pretty accurate. Or like when they are in space and there's no low gravity at first but then they explain it's because of the constant acceleration of the nuclear engine, and damned if that didn't make perfect sense.

@theropologist

Herge was famous for doing thorough research into topics he would make his comics about. His comic about flight 714 has a plane with a swing wing because it can go super-sonic.

He later came to regret his earlier work 'Tintin in Congo' because he had grown enough to realise what a mistake he had made, so had it removed from publication.

He was a very flawed human being, but he changed, loved and lived like a human being. I'll always admire that ex-nazi.
