beige.party is one of the many independent Mastodon servers you can use to participate in the fediverse.
A home to friendly weirdos. The Grey Gardens of the Fediverse (but beige). Occasionally graphically cacographic. Definitely probably not a cult (though you'll never be 100% sure). Beige-bless 🙏

Reay

Afternoon, all --

My 14-year-old is considering joining Masto and has some pretty specific interests.

Rather than having them go through the wild west of the global Masto feeds to find accounts of interest like I had to -- that was a loooong process for me initially when I joined, when I had to curate a list of follows by checking out random-ass feeds from everyone everywhere, and it was very much

@reay @alcinnz I think the only way to put a child on the Fediverse safely would be an allowlist "island" network for that purpose, where you only federate with servers that are on board with supporting children. writer.oliphant.social/oliphan

Any open federated server could be surprised by a new e.g. Nazi server that hasn't made it onto a block list yet. If you can tolerate an occasional moderation failure like that, then an island may not be necessary, but many parents would find that unacceptable.

The Oliphant · IslandsIslands are opt-in federated networks consisting of a chain of allowlist or "limited federation" servers linked together. Everyone in the...

@skyfaller @alcinnz See? Hadn't heard about something like this before.

Thanks!

@skyfaller @alcinnz Read the link and that’s already well over my head, unfortunately.

Are Islands already things I can go investigate?

@reay @alcinnz Yes, the first example is the ION network: codeberg.org/oliphant/islands/

To be a member, a server must federate with all other ION network servers, but can also federate with any other servers that meet their moderation standards. Ask @oliphant if you need help.

There is also an allowlist network run by ex-Cohost users which is currently exclusive, meaning a member server can only federate with other Website League servers. websiteleague.org/

@reay there are all sorts of explicit content on Mastodon. I know because I’m a moderator, and we see more than you might imagine.

Some servers allow pornography, while some don’t. Finding one that doesn’t will help because they will be moderating that more than others.

But I’m curious why you use the qualifier “gay.” Twice. Do you find straight porn acceptable?

@markwyner

Thanks for the feedback and solid take on how to help narrow down an instance. I think the list or two I started scrutinizing when I first joined, which broke down some ideas of what were and weren't acceptable, aren't even online any more.
Would you know of any decent lists that offer that kind of synopsis?
I came across one recently when I was migrating away from mastodon.social, but it was pretty short and not super helpful.

As to your other point:

Apologies to one and all if the doubling down on gay porn stood out as a commentary of myself or opinion on such stuff.

My experience I summarized -- a bit quippy and off-handedly, In retrospect -- was very much that when I was starting off: I don't recall seeing much (any?) straight porn when I saw it on the global feed, but saw a fair bit of gay (more to the point, M/M) porn.

My synopsis of what I was seeing (Tamil, dad joke, etc.) was hugely truncated for expediency in the post but was genuinely not far off what the mix of what the global feed consisted of.

To your question, I think porn is entirely acceptable for those who are seeking it out (and assuming all parties involved are of age and consenting).

I was trying to say, albeit poorly, that porn of any stripe isn't something I want my teen to have to sift through to find accounts of interest to follow. Gay porn just happened to be the kind I encountered, hence my mentioning it as I did.

@reay there’s integrity in your response. Thank you for your thoughtful explanation.

It’s important that we keep each other in check, to eradicate biases. We all have them and they can creep up on us subconsciously. That’s why the battle for equality is a long road, fraught with danger. We’re trying to rewire our brains.

Anyway, my question was a prompt for reflection on the phrasing. I appreciate that it didn’t come across as an attack. Thanks for your grace.

We grow and learn together. ✊🏻
