Just had my first PhD rejection 😬 I wrote to this supervisor twice, once pre-application and once post application, and he didnt respond. The doctoral college admissions teams chased him up and told me that he said he wasn’t interested in my application. I’m quite disappointed but tbh if he couldn’t get his shit together to politely tell me that himself he would be awful to work with. Oh well, let’s see where the other applications go

@purplepadma

Was going to do a big Bensplain with all of the platitudes. However I say instead...... ❤️👊

@TheBreadmonkey Honestly I was already starting to think that someone who doesn’t exhibit common courtesy does not seem like good supervisor material

@purplepadma

Also that if you're admitted into a PhD that isn't right for you you'd ultimately be unhappy so he's done you a favour and sometimes a no is a positive etc etc. Only serves to put you on a track that leads to a more positive outcome or another important lesson or OH MY GOD I'M SUCH A FUCKING HIPPY SORRY. TLDR - fuck them, you're amazing. Their loss. 👊

@TheBreadmonkey Yes, I don’t need an enormous wanker in my life

@purplepadma

Let me just check - you *are* speaking to PhD supervisors aren't you?....

(oh no he di-n't)

I've met a couple of PhD supervisors and the ratio is not 100% either way

Also...... You do talk to me and I'm not 100% *not* an enormous wanker

@TheBreadmonkey You are a shining star in my firmament

@purplepadma

This is far kinder than I deserve. I am a chaotic ball of mischief and misery. A juggernaut of endless madness. A maelstrom of idiocy. Decaying atoms from a dying universe, locked in entropy, falling into an unknowable void of endless nothingness. A cannonball of..... stuff.

(sorry - you said firmament and I didn't know what it meant so I had to look it up and then wanted to respond with cleverosity and instead got carried away on a flight of nonsense. Also I don't take compliments well and tend to get weird. Sorry!)

@purplepadma

Enjoying cleverosity though. Feeling pretty cleverosity about it.

@purplepadma A bad supervisor is hell. You're better off out of that.

@purplepadma Sorry about the rejection, they sting - but, yup, you're better off without him.

@purplepadma wait, did i miss something? i thought you had left the PhD track and got a job? sorry, i get lost sometimes...

@rothko No, you’re right! But the job is only a 12 month contract and I still want to do a PhD… I just really don’t want to do it by distance learning this time, it didn’t work for me at all

@purplepadma
That's his loss, and seems like you're better off without him.

@Sharonbw Thank you, I suspect him of being a not nice person

@purplepadma The relationship to the supervisor can make or break a PhD, so it's worth holding out for someone with expertise, capacity and above all a real interest in your project. Someone you feel you can work with. It might have been helpful if he'd given a reason as to why he wasn't interested, but it sounds like it really wasn't meant to be!

@GreenLeftHand Oh I totally agree. It would’ve been even more helpful if he’d responded to my enquiries himself, anyone who doesn’t have the common courtesy to do that is not for me!

@purplepadma
Stay positive. Something better will come along. He sounds very toxic to be around.

@Callalily Yes, you are right. I wouldn’t want to work with him anyway!
