Reporter: "You clearly admire President Zelenskyy. So I'm wondering what you thought when you saw the treatment he received in the Oval Office on Friday?"
Justin Trudeau, Prime Minister of Canada:
"I think, first of all, it's important every chance we get to lay out the facts as clearly as possible. In 2014, Russia chose to invade Ukraine, to occupy Crimea and parts of Eastern Ukraine. For that, they were kicked out of the G7 and in 2022 they chose to violate the existing ceasefire and invaded Ukraine with the intention of taking Kyiv in three days and the entire country in three weeks. That has failed. Russia continues to try to fight to claim more land in Ukraine, and we could see an end to this war tomorrow if Russia decided to stop its illegal invasion of Ukraine. On Friday in the Oval Office, President Zelenskyy pointed out in so many words that Vladimir Putin is a liar and a criminal and cannot be trusted to keep his word in any way, shape or form, because he has demonstrated time and time again that he will break any agreements. I stand with Volodymyr Zelenskyy and I stand with the people of Ukraine."
Note that these simple historic facts which are public knowledge and can be looked up by anyone, are what were stated by Volodymyr Zelenskyy when Donald Trump responded with, "It is very disrespectful of you to litigate this in front of American media" (found about halfway through the meeting, if you're looking in the videos).
Trump was attempting to spread Putin's "alternate timeline" to the American people, and told Zelenskyy that it is "disrespectful" of him to tell historic truth about what happened in his own country, in front of live video cameras in the US. Think about that...
Donald Trump went absolutely livid when President Zelenskyy gave the American people a free history lesson on live tv, something which he knows his base would never read for themselves.
Too many corporate media outlets are putting out headlines that read, "'Very disrespectful', says Trump" without telling the truth of what he found disrespectful, which was (in his own words) to counter Russian propaganda in front of American media.

@ned The current US president is merely Putin's puppet
To a dishonest man, telling the truth is threatening and disrespectful.
@ned I am genuinely deeply sorry to see Trudeau leave his PM role next week. Damn.
@ned "disrespectful"... that asshole deserves no respect.
@ned You've raised yet another interesting point - in international relations, if you plan to bully someone, you do it out of sight of the media, because no-one wants to look like a bully and you can deny the bullying if necessary.
So why did Trump and Vance choose to do this in front of in a roomful of diplomats ( not shown in some videos) and TV cameras? Who do they think is going to love them for this - apart from Putin?
@anne_twain Probably Putin is all the eyes they need.
Being bullies in the open is how they got all the support they have domestically.
@anne_twain @ned
True, those are clearly different arenas - but does Trump and his yes-men understand that difference? I've heard him compared to always being a stereotypical crass NY real estate developer and not able to deviate from that.
@anne_twain @ned true, true.
@ned I’m curious why he didn’t start with the 1994 Budapest Memorandum.
True that!
Although to be fair, even Ukrainians recognize the invasion of 2014 (NOT 2022) as "the start of this war".
But there was still a lot of history leading up to it...
@ned No one would be invading Ukraine in 2014 if they still had nukes.
Yeah, true that. And what incentive is there for anybody to disarm, now that we know "security guarantees" are lies, and the ones asking you to disarm could be the ones coming for you next?
@ned ...and superpowers openly talking about annexing other countries. I'd expect more countries to acquire nukes.
@jchyip Exactly!
