A home to friendly weirdos. The Grey Gardens of the Fediverse (but beige). Occasionally graphically cacographic. Definitely probably not a cult (though you'll never be 100% sure). Beige-bless 🙏

Americans, your egg prices are higher because of antitrust. Egg production isn't down as much as they're letting on.

"50-170% profit margin per dozen." That's higher than software.

Worth reading: thebignewsletter.com/p/hatchin (Yes, it's a Substack link.)

Vegans, I get it. You can live without eggs. Enjoy your moral high road and let these monopolies hit you in all other parts of your life.

This fight against an egg monopoly is as much about animal welfare as it is about pricing and our consumption practices.

@mayintoronto incredible that despite all this people still haven't figured out that they shouldn't support the industry by eating eggs in the first place

@rio Or we can regulate our animal industries, so animals can have better lives, instead of existing to enrich capitalists, resulting in both less food and worse lives for animals. We can make a more reasonable request to get people to reduce their consumption.

Meat and egg consumption are deeply cultural things. To break free from tradition is never an easy thing to do.

@mayintoronto some traditions are bad. there's no such thing as a good life for someone raised and killed for food

@ABScientist That was addressed in the article. It's minor. Canadian egg prices barely budged and we were hit just as hard.

@mayintoronto

In Europe the eggs are not that expensive.

Maybe they think that otherwise US citizens will drive to Canada to buy the eggs?

Where do eggs in Canada come from?

@ABScientist Funny you mentioned that.

Canadian eggs have public supply controls and management and no monopoly.

Anyway, maybe read the article? This is an article (and a very good blog in general) about antitrust in the US.

"...Then they came for the eggs, and I did not speak out-- because I was a vegan."

@pockets That's funny. Credit where credit is due. Vegans have always been speaking out. I'll say that they're not wrong either.

It's just that the problem we're all facing is corporate monopolies and this is not explicitly a diet issue. Without monopolies, there would also likely be fewer ads and product placements pushing eggs and meat as an integral part of our culture.

@mayintoronto
I saw your comment and couldn't resist.
Wasn't intended as any criticism of anyone's speaking out or lack thereof.

I'm in no position to throw stones.
