A huge feature of every election for me has been going to rallies and listening to speeches made by old school politicians in non-English, non-Mandarin languages. To me they represent a robust post-colonial Singapore that has faded, the one of unions and debates and anti-colonialist fervour, a world before technocracy. Being able to understand the Teochew and Malay speeches felt like a connection into that past.
@skinnylatte That's really cool. I don't speak any of my dad's village dialect (Hoklo), but he does speak a bit of Teochiu too. Some days I feel like I've already lost so much Cantonese as well.
I wonder how long these languages will stick around for. It's hard to keep them up when we're all so far from tradition.
@mayintoronto I once gave a brief political speech in Teochew. Not as good as this guy, but very few people my age and below can speak or understand it at all.
