beige.party is one of the many independent Mastodon servers you can use to participate in the fediverse.
A home to friendly weirdos. The Grey Gardens of the Fediverse (but beige). Occasionally graphically cacographic. Definitely probably not a cult (though you'll never be 100% sure). Beige-bless 🙏

Is volunteer-run servers with open registration the right governance model for the Fediverse?

So, I am a Strong No. First, because I agree with a lot of commenters that there is no single governance model for the Fediverse. But second, because I don't think volunteer-run servers with only loose affinity with users is a good structure for admins' mental health and for users' account reliability. I'd like to see more people using household servers, servers from their employer or university, coop servers, and servers as public infrastructure.

@evan good poll. Interesting to see the split. I agree when I think of servers with tons of people on it and open registration. That is for sure a team's worth of moderation and if people who moderate for meta tell war stories and have ptsd, it speaks.

The distrust of institutions is a big part of who is here though. And small servers with a certain vibe to them, and someone at the door checking that who gets in is there for that party for reals, that I think is something that can really grow here.

And I do think companies and universities could have a well run presence, but I would want some real separation of where I find that. I don't want it in my feed. That would feel like it defeats the point of the TL here.

I specially don't want politicians on it though I know some people feel it's necessary. Social media all started going down hill right when they got their moneyed hands on it, imo. Not enough reward for their presence. They should have their own thing where non politicians run it, and they can fight it out in a proper arena. haha I am so tired of them in your living room between friendly conversation.

@gettingcomputey so, you have a great opportunity to determine who and what is in your timeline, which is by following people you're interested in, and blocking people you're definitely not interested in.

@evan That's work. I wanna go easily seek them out when I want to see them. I would like that more. Them default blended in to my tl is not a thing I would like.

@gettingcomputey well, unfortunately, both of us being on the Fediverse doesn't give you a veto on who I can connect to.

@evan Definitely not trying to say that. Not who I am. All I am referring to is how things are revealed. Perhaps what I said sounded really limiting. I guess I meant it more from an app perspective.

What I mean is like, right now we have here and Lemmy, for example. I would want those uni servers, those company servers, to be on a fediverse app of their own like that. That you can choose to sign up for to show up in your feed. I like the choice. This place is nice like this for me. I like it like this. If that suddenly was part of my feed and I had to block it to not see it, I dunno that I would stick around personally.

Trying to contribute to the convo, hope I am not coming across argumentative. :blobcatbusiness:
