A de-centralized, federated network, using a common, NON-COMMERCIAL, #FOSS protocol, such as the #fediverse can actually save lives and fight the onslaught of dezinformatsiya.
#Meshtastic #GMRS devices were used to keep people connected, sending messages through #ActivityPub based clients, during catastrophic weather events which knocked standard comms networks down.
#DTBO socmedia (such as #BlueSky, #Threads, #Telegram, etc) were actively used to disseminate #dezinformatsiya, during those catastrophic events, and other emergencies.
Taking the internet back from walled-garden, corporate, proprietary networks can mean the difference between life or death for many.
Government should not be owned, operated or focused on corporations, but be by People, for People.

*I* did not do that. I know OF people who run Meshtastic GMRS/RaspPi units, which used their output to send messages, using its comms capabilities, to and from clients of ActivityPub protocol based services.
That helped them get critical information regarding coming help, and status of other people, in the aftermath of Hurricane Helene.
No corporate socmedia #DTBO will do that for you.

This came on another forum, in a discussion about the failures of government disseminated information, using #DTBO corporate venues, that failed either because their inherent flaws (centralized, unitary resources) or because the individuals who own the corporation thought the government message would be contrary to their interests.
Local governments could and should run their own de-centralized, federated instances of communication protocols, not reliant on corporate interests.
TL;DR it's very feasible for even a small city to run its own #fediverse instance, to disseminate and receive critical information, pertinent to the welfare of its citizens.
