beige.party is one of the many independent Mastodon servers you can use to participate in the fediverse.
A home to friendly weirdos. The Grey Gardens of the Fediverse (but beige). Occasionally graphically cacographic. Definitely probably not a cult (though you'll never be 100% sure). Beige-bless 🙏

@cobalt123 @pluralistic What's the sound of one instance federating?

@cobalt123 @pluralistic thanks for sharing this post! I'm with you in the "fool me twice" camp. I stopped using/trusting Meta & X when I realized I am not the user, I am the product.

@bayport_moto @cobalt123 @pluralistic

"Enshittification isn’t merely the result of greed or foolishness — it is the inevitable consequence of a captive userbase."

This is the key.

@pluralistic @bayport_moto @cobalt123 @fedipete

it is the inevitable consequence of a captive userbase

Not entirely sure what is mend by "captive userbase".

It could be interesting to look out for examples where enshittification didn't occur and see what they trully have in common.
I guess debian is an example, the bitcoin code, the VW beetle or the Land Rover Defender.
Rules like "if it isn't broken don't fix it" and "KISS" come to mind.

Look's to me that most of enshittification occurs out of the need to justify the employment, the need of the ego of newbees to reinvent the wheel, and "just a little bit more".

@pluralistic

Why is your name attached to Free Our Feeds"?

This looks like a scam to me.

No structure or governance as Free Our Feeds pinky promise that they have "9 custodians", unnamed, to manage donations. They will have the foundation set up by "the end of 2025". But send money now.

And all the while activity pub exists and does what they want my money to do. What the actual fuck?

@worik Did you look at my blog to see if I wrote a long article explaining this before messaging me about it? Because I did.

@pluralistic yes I did

Did you answer my question why your name is attached to an organization which has no existence trying to raise millions

Looks very much like a scam, but for the people endorsing it

@cobalt123 thx for the links and response @fedipete!

I read and commented on @pluralistic's latest take already. Truly sorry to tell you, but Cory and I defer in the evaluation about the main reasons why people are captive, (actually they only feel that they are captivated) and how to properly react.

So, as I got this for now, "captive userbase" is people that went into a room and are knocking on it's wide open door sobering that they have no other choice than being violated day and night inside that open door prison they feel captivated in.

  • Cory considers my position unemphatic, I consider speaking truth to imprisoned minds the first step to enable them to free themselves.
  • He considers to speak in favor of investing money to loosen their chains an act of mercy, I consider it an act of improving their chains and making them feeling free in their newly elected open door prison, prolonging and improving the locked in effect.
  • He considers it useful and a smart move to speak in favor and putting his name on the line, same as @mmasnick does, investing money to create another open door in the new walled open door prison garden called #bluesky, I prefer to invest every cent to show them that the gate is open and that there are plentiful gardens out there in the free as in freedom #freeWeb called the #fediVerse we build and improve for them every day.

"Captive users" is synonym to self imprisoned masochists who actually love the masters house, their house.
Shall they live happily ever after in their self inflicted imagined algorithmic prison.

¡peace!

I definitely had preferred a simple answer in your own words, I know how to google and search wikipedia, there are lot's of reasons to ask people directly, one without any doubt is:
