I'm going to ask a #computer question:
Give me your takes on: system 76,
MNT reform, lemur and darter pro.
Go!
@arisummerland The good: Their packaging is phenomenal, their flavor of Linux is pretty good, and their warranty service is excellent.
The bad: Their hardware was not particularly reliable. Both my wife and I had to send our S76 laptops in for warranty repairs within a few months of getting them delivered. Hers has run like a champ since then, but mine is barely being held together with duct tape.
I do not think that these problems are indicative of System76...I've worked on computers for a really long time and I've gotten Dells with bad hardware before too. Sometimes bad luck is just bad luck.
As a company, they are responsive and responsible, so assuming that the prices aren't a turn-off for you, they're probably no worse than anyone else.
@roknrol Thank you. One of the books that I'm reading suggests, for someone like me who is not super tech savvy anymore, that I get a machine specifically built for Linux. That's mainly why I'm asking.
It's not something I can likely afford this year, but the Fedi is certainly making me more aware of the necessity of a more secure machine in this world where privacy isn't a thing anymore.
