A home to friendly weirdos. The Grey Gardens of the Fediverse (but beige). Occasionally graphically cacographic. Definitely probably not a cult (though you'll never be 100% sure). Beige-bless 🙏

I'm going to ask a question:

Give me your takes on: system 76,
MNT reform, lemur and darter pro.

Go!

@arisummerland The good: Their packaging is phenomenal, their flavor of Linux is pretty good, and their warranty service is excellent.

The bad: Their hardware was not particularly reliable. Both my wife and I had to send our S76 laptops in for warranty repairs within a few months of getting them delivered. Hers has run like a champ since then, but mine is barely being held together with duct tape.

I do not think that these problems are indicative of System76...I've worked on computers for a really long time and I've gotten Dells with bad hardware before too. Sometimes bad luck is just bad luck.

As a company, they are responsive and responsible, so assuming that the prices aren't a turn-off for you, they're probably no worse than anyone else.

@roknrol Thank you. One of the books that I'm reading suggests, for someone like me who is not super tech savvy anymore, that I get a machine specifically built for Linux. That's mainly why I'm asking.

It's not something I can likely afford this year, but the Fedi is certainly making me more aware of the necessity of a more secure machine in this world where privacy isn't a thing anymore.

@arisummerland
I have owned 2 @system76 computers and I was happy with both of them. The price is reasonable, having a machine I KNOW will work with Linux is important to me, and their support is good. They even put up with me when I was really disregulated over a situation I was having.
My current Serval was obtained in 2018, and the only issues it has is some damage to the display pannel resulting in bright spots, and the RGB colors have gone weird (white is still good though, which I use)

@arisummerland
The performance is better than I'd expect for the price. Pop OS isn't a good fit for me personally, but I enjoyed seeing it grow up from just a reskinned Ubuntu to its own unique disto with unique qualities.

If I'm able to afford a new machine when I can't keep going with the one I have, I intend to strongly consider @system76 again.

@arisummerland
All that said, I do have one criticism of @system76. The new version of my laptop that they offer on their site has a significantly reduced set of IO. My laptop is a big chonky thick thing covered in ports on purpose, that's what I want. My current laptop doesn't need a bunch of dongles and crap, and that's what I'll be looking for again when it's time to replace it. In an era where tech keeps getting shittier, I use older periphrials and need USB A, SPDIF, and plenty of audio IO

@hellomiakoda @system76 Hee hee still being a Mac user, I'm used to not having ports. It's part of the reason why I was looking at the MNT machine as well. Though it may really be over my head as far as being overwhelmingly customizable.
