Happy International Mens Day, everyone!
I am (as always) tempted to be extremely silly and make a load of jokes, but it is a rare opportunity to actually be a positive force for change. Particularly considering that I am a man and I don't know if you're aware of this but men are not always like totally 100% cool, y'know?
So. I am asking you today to think about positive male role models. For every Andrew Tate (who is no longer part of International Mens Day - we all got together and voted him out), there is a Gareth from my running club, who dedicates his time to nurturing young men who are struggling, or a Ken who took me in and housed me when I was homeless and hopeless.
These heroes are almost always unsung, and if you search online for positive male role models, you are unlikely to find examples; only examples of toxic ones. Which is obviously quite sad. We need more positive role models.
I'm not talking about someone who grows a moustache for a month or does a charity walk - I'm talking about men who effect consistent positive change in their community or as an example to the young men of tomorrow. Obviously to other children aswell, but I am interested in men who serve as a positive example, growing future positive change from the roots, which is the only way we are going to move forwards.
Challenging the precept that being good or kind or vulnerable compromises our masculinity.
So I just want to beam all of you Kings out there all the best. Together, men strong (like apes, only I said men, and I meant emotionally, not like in a tug of war or anything).
Remember to support each other and yourselves. We all struggle sometimes and IT IS OK TO ASK FOR HELP. x
... And on this theme, I would like to nominate some international mans here who *I* think are positive male role models on Fedi - @adhdeanasl and @HG. Both of whom you should follow immediately if you're not already. Aswell as being terrifically funny and interesting, they both exude compassion and empathy and have talked openly about things that I've found not only very moving but also personally helpful.
Perhaps you know of someone on Fedi that is a positive male role model in some way that you might want to highlight today? The chaps I mentioned are just my lived experience (that felt immediately relevant to me) here but it would be good to see some other men from across the spectrum.
@TheBreadmonkey I can't speak for Fediverse, but a decade ago I started following Dr. Nerdlove, first on Twitter and later, on his blog.
Guy has fairly sensible advice for men and women about dating and love that go beyond sex life into general wellbeing. He introduced me to a much healthier outlook on male sexuality, one that goes beyond crass and nihilist way of thinking common on social media.
@TheBreadmonkey @adhdeanasl @HG I'd like to name @pzmyers. Through his Pharyngula blog, he has had a profound influence on my view of the world. And I'm sure I'm not the only one.
@TheBreadmonkey Ben, I appreciate that very much, and I appreciate YOU. Thanks for being a kind and positive voice here, my friend! @HG
you @TheBreadmonkey are wonderful
@TheBreadmonkey @adhdeanasl @HG
Ooh! 2 new follows found.
I'll add @mekkaokereke who should be on everybody's list.
Aww thanks Ben! I wish I had more thoughtful thoughts to share right now, but I am gonna listen to Salt-n-Peppa's "Whatta Man" and reflect on some good male role models.
@HG @TheBreadmonkey @adhdeanasl sincerely, thanks for sharing. I see a lot of myself in what you write. I have people I admire that fit mostly well into those same general molds. It's good and healthy balance to have.
@HG @TheBreadmonkey @adhdeanasl Awwwww guys......
@justafrog @TheBreadmonkey @adhdeanasl
You'll get your chance if you stick around!
