A home to friendly weirdos. The Grey Gardens of the Fediverse (but beige). Occasionally graphically cacographic. Definitely probably not a cult (though you'll never be 100% sure). Beige-bless 🙏

@Remittancegirl The US-Russia and allies are patriarchal countries. The EU and Canada are Feminist countries.
All of what is going on is the backlash after progressive Feminism started making real gains. I don't know why we didn't see it coming.

It's incredibly depressing to me seeing women's rights being torn down in the US to the extent that abortions have been criminalised. Absolute barbarism.
Also, what we're seeing in the US and elsewhere is the culmination of the campaign that's been going since the 60s geared towards undoing the workers' rights that were achieved in the post war consensus.
'Tis is a time of darkness and monsters.

@Shivviness

Democracy is not a fixed state. You have to fight for it every day anew. Said someone famous, I guess, whom I don't remember.

@LaChasseuse @Remittancegirl

@aerofreak @Shivviness @Remittancegirl The weakness of democracy is that it contains the seeds of its own destruction. It doesn't guard against lies and false promises, it grants a vote, but it does not insist on economic democracy (ie, socialism).

We need to put our best brains onto fixing this flaw. Fascism must be made illegal, punishable by law. The role of religions in promoting fascist thought must be routed out. Communication outlets and the economy must have ethical guidelines.

@LaChasseuse

I think most of what you call weaknesses of democracy are actually weaknesses of the human being itself. Socialism has never worked anywhere. But curbing neo-capitalism, levying appropriate taxes and at least limiting wealth would certainly be an important step towards strengthening democracies.

@Shivviness @Remittancegirl

@aerofreak I think you are confusing socialism with communism. Communism hasn't worked anywhere, but socialism is actively working very well in many countries. What is socialism? A good public school system, good public transport, public libraries, medicare, support for the infirm and the elderly.

@Shivviness @Remittancegirl

@LaChasseuse

According to your definition, Germany would be a socialist country. We are not. The problem: there is no one and only definition of the term. Here's what Wikipedia mentions in the first sentence:

“Socialism is an economic and political philosophy encompassing diverse economic and social systems characterised by social ownership of the means of production, as opposed to private ownership.”

@Shivviness @Remittancegirl

@LaChasseuse
That's what I was talking about. It has never worked well in any country.

@Shivviness @Remittancegirl

@aerofreak Well, you got rid of your kings, that's a good start.
