I'm not sure these things are mutually exclusive. I fully agree fighting fascism is more important than worrying about harming the neurodiverse community, and others, who identify as weird.
If folk think "weird" is disproportionately better to shame and humiliate those on the right who deserve such mockery than other words, have at it.
But I'm pretty sure we can get the same effect without the damage to our allies by substituting in "creep" or something similar, almost always.
@FantasticalEconomics @thomasfuchs
There are so many better words than "weird", speaking as yet another weird person in this thread. Fascist, cruel, evil, psychopathic etc are all so much better.
This isn't a 1980s Highschool movie. It's actually okay to be weird these days
@Shivviness @FantasticalEconomics @thomasfuchs Except that those words all sound powerful; they don't seem to get under their skin in quite the same way. (And we know because we've tried. See also "deplorable")
Though I might suggest "strange" or "creepy" as possible alternatives.
@samadeleine @FantasticalEconomics @thomasfuchs
I am fully on board with "strange" and "creepy" as pejoratives for Trump. Just not "weird". That word is already claimed by the neurodivergent and other associated weirdos community.
God, how I wish this all didn't reek so much of the schoolyard.
Dunno, it frustrates me to think that there are likely amazing schoolteachers out there currently sitting children down and telling that "it's okay to be weird". Then Kamala spouts this utter drivel.
Also, can all the members of the "strange community" please pipe down
