beige.party is one of the many independent Mastodon servers you can use to participate in the fediverse.
A home to friendly weirdos. The Grey Gardens of the Fediverse (but beige). Occasionally graphically cacographic. Definitely probably not a cult (though you'll never be 100% sure). Beige-bless 🙏

When you are a pessimist and the bad thing happens, you live it twice. Once when you worry about it, and the second time when it happens.

-Amos Tversky

@RickiTarr You also live it even if it doesn’t happen.

@RickiTarr I have someone close to me that is like that. They are always worried about the worse possible outcome and as a result they suffer from it even when that worse outcome never materialises.
It’s pretty draining.

Dig up Amos Tversky and correct him.

@RickiTarr living twice as much life as those dumb optimistic suckers!

@RickiTarr i speak from experience when I say that he’s confusing pessimism and anxiety

@RickiTarr

It's better than that - we pessimists *always* get to live it at least once even if it never happens!

@RickiTarr
if you’re a real pessimist*, then you live it once times the number of minutes between starting to fear it and it happening and all the minutes after when you know you could have done something about it but you didn’t because you were too busy worrying about it…

*takes 1 2 know 1

@RickiTarr
The pessimist says: "Times are so bad. It can't get any worse!"

But the optimist says: "Yes, it can!"
😉

@RickiTarr way more than twice. Ask me how I know.

@RickiTarr

There is a Buddhist saying that goes something like

”Don’t worry. If it doesn’t happen, you have worried in vain. If it DOES happen, worrying won’t change anything.”

@RickiTarr "My philosophy is that worrying means you suffer twice.” Newt Scamander.

(I actually learned the source of this quote from a funny bit by comedian Taylor Tomlinson talking about therapy.)
