We are scared and tired, and I'm seeing people lash out against each other here on Fedi, and it's not a good look. Before you start typing out an angry post about what Canada should do or America, or Europe, take a second to think, does this help or hurt? They want us divided and fighting amongst each other, we are easier to defeat that way. It's just not useful or helpful. So, what does help? Instead of blame game or just demanding someone fix this now, post concrete things people can actually do. If there is a boycott to take part in, a scheduled protest, a petition to sign, a politician to call or email, a cause to donate to, please share that in the comments and write your own post as well. We may not all agree on every detail, but I think overall we have similar values and goals, let's lean into that instead of away from it. I love you all, I want us all to live well and equitably.
Remember you can't fix everything, pick something you really care about and participate the best you can. Something is better than completely burning out, and not being able to do anything at all.
If you suggest acts of violence in my comments section, I will block you. What you do on your own account is up to you, but please respect my boundaries.
Let's lead with empathy first, remember a lot of people are barely surviving, remember some are disabled, many are actively targeted, most are living paycheck to paycheck if that. It is much easier to say, You should just...but people still need to live and care for their families. Them being dead for our cause is not useful.
@RickiTarr in another post someone suggested trying to use open source software for more things. For those of us without a lot of info on that, is there anyone out there that could make a list or has a list of open source alternatives to many of the apps that are corporate owned and which operating systems they work on? It would be great for me and I could use it to share with other family and friends who don't even seem to believe that these things exist
@Star12Mt @RickiTarr this is my goto. https://selfh.st/apps/
Lets you find alternatives to common software that you can host yourself.
@thegpfury @RickiTarr Great list!
@Star12Mt@masto.nyc @RickiTarr@beige.party Well, here's a list for things that are web apps (that you can host for yourself).

I'll try to see if I can remember any other lists that aren't just the generic infographic about photoshop alternatives. Something that I genuinely recommend to people is https://www.firefly-iii.org/ because a lot of bank apps have budget options but they use that against you (it helps back decisions like credit card applications and your overall risk assessment).
@Star12Mt @RickiTarr there are quite a few of those. but it's generally easier to start with what you want to replace and look from there. and there are so many of us open source nerds here on the fedi you'll never be short of advice
@Star12Mt There's also https://alternativeto.net/ which is useful as you can filter for opensource/free etc and on Operating System.
I use it quite often.
@chewie Thank you!
@RickiTarr
Aye, I get a little uppity at times - but everyday people have never been my problem. I try to only point my rage at the obscenely rich, powerful, and influential.
Who you treat as an enemy speaks more about a person than who they choose as a friend. Especially so on the internet.
Be excellent to each other. Please.
(RFK Jr. can go suck eggs, though)
@RickiTarr I get it. But, why doesn't a lack of empathy hurt the other side?
