#MorningAll & #TZAG G’day Squirrel Fans, hope I find you bright eyed & bushy tailed!
Sunday is dull & very wet here in deepest, darkest Yorkshire.
It’s Mrs S’s birthday so we’re off to Harrogate to Bettys Tea Rooms for her birthday treat. (Part 1)
Enjoying an episode of Father Brown with my coffee before getting ready to go out.
Cashew later Peeps, have a fabulously nutty day #Today !

HBD Mrs S from bonnie aberdeen.
getting flat decorated.
so not a peaceful sunday at chez paul's.
Alt text wonky.
Exposed lath.
Plasterboard that won't fit in car. We cut it up and luckily it did not rain.
Strawberry on ground.
Stork in nest.
@amiserabilist We had a near death experience transporting a too large piece of plasterboard, cutting it up was eminently sensible!
You keep your larch to yourself - the nerve of some folk wandering around with their lath exposed!!
I’m assuming that you hired the stork because you couldn’t afford a crane for your home improvements?
haha,
i got windows and floors to stop draught but it is still coming through the walls.
my mate is doing the work part time, so will be on the sofa till friday night.
i could stay at friends but that is too much of an imposition.
the stork is advertising stork roofing.
we had to detour as they shut the main road and turned town into a low emission zone.
@amiserabilist Ah I had a right job fighting the drafts in our house - I wish you luck with the renovations - I hope they all go to plan!
I like my version of the stork better
the place is over 100 years old.
they were built to last.
well the ones that lasted that long were.
new builds are falling apart.
rubbish materials and workmanship.
building firms are folding like a house of cards.
it is a right mess.
i hope you won the battle of the drafts.
@amiserabilist Ours was built in the 60s & the extension even later - it’s the extension we have the most problems with.
The battle the drafts is mostly won.
Herons, Storks and Cranes – Aren’t They All the Same?
Long legs, long necks, and long bills – surely Herons, Storks, and Cranes must all be a part of the same family? As much as they may appear to be relatives, the short answer is that they actually come from three separate families. The morphological difference may seem to be subtle on the surface, but the other key features become more recognizable as you become aware of them. I recently provided a few tips to distinguish between Swifts, Swallows, and Martins and a good suggestion came up to do the same for these three bird families.

@amiserabilist Who knew!
You are the Fediverse’s very own Wikipedia my friend!

every day is a school day.
@amiserabilist @MAJ1 you wanna fuck with the eagles, you gotta learn how to fly
@amiserabilist @MAJ1 you need to watch that movie- STAT!
@amiserabilist @glasspusher Hey you’re right more times than not mate!
I always find it ironic that we have a shortage of helium on earth, it being one of the most prolific of all elements in the universe!
Helium makes up about 0.0005% of the Earth's atmosphere. The reason this amount stays so small is because the helium that's released from the Earth's crust or your birthday balloon is constantly escaping into space. This low concentration in the air makes it inefficient to harvest.
https://www.britannica.com/video/Are-We-Running-Out-of-Helium/-280322
Helium can be easily retrieved from the atmosphere by fractional distillation. It leaks up into the atmosphere from the radioactive core of the Earth and forms naturally from solar radiation in the upper atmosphere, keeping atmospheric concentration high enough.
We get gasses like Argon and Neon the same way all the time. There is no helium crisis and there will never be a shortage in the next billion years.
The situation where Helium is much cheaper than Neon may end but there will always be plenty for industrial and science uses, even if balloons get more expensive.

@glasspusher see you after class?
Ycombinator comments, always a fount of quality thought.
That comment is so comical I’ll leave it as an exercise to the reader to derive why I’m laughing
Pro tip from a chemical engineering perspective: try to start with a feedstock of your desired material that isn’t vanishingly thin on, if at all possible
Also there’s about a milligram of gold per cubic meter of seawater. Tell me why they don’t bother getting that out, either
@amiserabilist @MAJ1 Parallel evolution is pretty cool. Same solutions for the same problems, arrived at in different species.
@amiserabilist @MAJ1 Is it a live stork or a sculpture? Was the company named after it, or did they deliberately give it a good nesting spot?
White Stork spotted in a field in Aberdeenshire
Hi.
Not sure where to post a sighting.
I know they are quite rare in the UK so I thought I'd mention it.
A single White stork in a sheep field just outside Huntly in Aberdeenshire. I got a couple of really rubbish photos on my phone.
I drove back passed about an hour later and it had gone.
@MAJ1 Happy Birthday to Mrs. S
good morning it's -6 here now ...
@Lstn2urmama Awwww thanks
