It was upon my return to Brooklyn that I got the "Card Not Accepted" message. I tried again; same message. I then realized what must have happened—I had maxed out my credit card with the subway ride from my apartment. I then approached the MTA worker at the station for some assistance. I told her, I'm sure you deal with fare evaders all the time, but I'm not one of those. I'm a grown man, a professional with, yes, a maxed-out credit card, but a checking account with thousands of dollars in cash in it. I'm ready to pay my share and ride the train, and you're paid to help people pay for and ride the train. We're a match made in heaven. What do you say?

"I can't help you with your card. Call your bank," she replied.

No problem, right? My functioning debit card is also in my Apple Wallet, and I also paid down my credit card on the Bank of America app then and there. I just need to switch the ole payment method and I should be riding the subway via OMNY to my heart's content…

This is when things got fucking annoying. When I clicked to pay the outstanding charge, the payment method that popped up was my old debit card. Nevermind, I thought, I'll just pay with my actual debit card, or my now-functioning credit card, both of which were listed as payment methods. But when I clicked on the outstanding $2.90 charge, there was only the option to pay with the card that had declined, which got declined because it no longer exists.

The MTA was dead set on getting $2.90 from my old Susan G. Komen Bank of America Debit Card ending in 0114. Any other way, they weren't having it.

It was outside of business hours for OMNY customer service (but within business hours for the subway and bus systems), so I didn't call. I shot over an email and went to sleep, sure that by the morning, I would hear back from OMNY and my transit life would be back on track.

But that morning passed, and so did another, and then another. Life got in the way, and I got used to life with a MetroCard again and resigned myself to forever owing the MTA $2.90. But then I returned from a trip to California, and full of hope, decided to try to use my phone to pay for my AirTrain. Perhaps the passage of time had fixed things. No: "Card Not Accepted," "Card Not Accepted." Enough was enough. OK, you're not getting the $2.90 from the Visa ending in 0114, MTA. That's not happening. You're going to have to accept that the Spirit Airlines Bank of America Free Spirit® Travel More World Elite Mastercard is all we have now.

I finally called OMNY customer service. Sixty people were ahead of me, but I waited, and finally, I got to Levi. He told me that he had to try to use my old debit card to pay the $2.90 I owed on his end, and then I had to try it again on my end on the OMNY website, and then, and only then, would I be allowed to change my payment method and reawaken my OMNY tap-to-pay. Three "Your Payment Was Not Successful" emails later, we had done it—we had switched my payment method.

I went to the Parkside Avenue subway station and tapped my phone. It lit up red again. FUCK. But it said "Try Again." So I did. Green. My nightmare was over…

Even as the MTA plans to phase out MetroCards by the end of this year, it's still treating OMNY as if it's a neat experiment, and not a robust system that the entire city of New York is going to need to use to get around. If I've learned anything, it's this: Don't max out your credit card on a subway ride.

Anyone in the Portland area who uses #TriMet care to Test Flight my app? It’s a re-write of the currently shipping version of PDX Transit however it is now 100% SwiftUI and uses Swift Data and Swift Concurrency — includes App Shortcuts, Widgets, & a SwiftUI version of PDX Transit for Apple Watch. Also has fun things like on device translations for service alerts and look around in Maps. Unlike the previous version, it has an iPad optimized layout too.

The AC Transit Board of Directors approved a two-phase fare adjustment, raising the local adult cash fare by 25 cents, from $2.50 to $2.75, and increasing the Transbay cash fare from $6 to $6.50, effective July 1, 2025. I *really* don't like these Veo scooters in my city. Everything from having public transit provided by a private company, to the fact you have to download an app to use them, to the fact people leave them in the worst places (as shown here) annoys me.
