beige.party is one of the many independent Mastodon servers you can use to participate in the fediverse.
A home to friendly weirdos. The Grey Gardens of the Fediverse (but beige). Occasionally graphically cacographic. Definitely probably not a cult (though you'll never be 100% sure). Beige-bless 🙏

Plastiksee. Linolschnitt und Materialdruck (Holz und Plastikbeutel). Foramt 97x140cm. Auflage 7.

Happy birthday to #biochemist Marie Maynard Daly (1921-2003), 1st Black woman to earn a PhD in #chemistry in the US! She made important research contributions to our understanding of the biochemisty of the cell nucleus & cardiovascular issues & the chemistry of histones & protein synthesis. She established that “no bases other than adenine, guanine, thymine, and cytosine were present in appreciable amounts” in DNA - 🧵

Thinking about pollinators, so sharing a favourite. This is a hand-printed lino block print of the charming Hummingbird Clearwing moth (Hermaris thysbe) seeking pollen from cherry blossoms. The olive-headed burgundy moth has transparent wings (though colour can be variable). It beats its wings rapidly to hover above flowers, like a hummingbird, meaning it is often confused with a hummingbird or bee. It has a 5 cm wingspan. 🧵

Ok I'm making a new intro post to try to find more of "my" people out here.

I like the #indieweb, #aquarium keeping, #printmaking and other #art, I'm in #arteducation in various capacities (higher ed, hospitals, schools), force-free #dogtraining and #americanhistory (esp the #civilwar).

I am moving to #baltimore in two weeks after years of planning and trying to make friends :) Social and outdoorsy. #sober and a little #woo after #longcovid recovery.

a jumble of Feynman diagrams and coloured shapes with a Bauhaus feel.

*I am somewhat dubious of this date because a) I was trained to use the metric convention day/month/year and b) physicists use the reduced constant h-bar (that’s h divided by 2 pi) and then, cause it’s easier they just change units such that h-bar = 1 but it’s as good an excuse as any

"The black sleep". Monotype, 31x18cm.

Inspired by a 1930s photo I stumbled on, of a girl sleeping on a boat deck, where I like the strong perspective. Also, the position of her hands. That's why I tried to keep only that and her face to see what it would look like.

I'm happy with my black background, compared to previous attempts at the same process. Applying the ink with a good brayer was the key.

Last night, I had trouble falling asleep, so I watched videos about dendritic monoprinting instead.
Today, I tested it a bit.
I didn't have glass that I trusted not to break, so I used some plexiglass scavenged from some random thing instead.
I tried two types of acrylic paint:
1. Paint in bottles by Plaid and Decoart, which made wider branches despite being thinner paint.
2. My old old old Winsor & Newton paints, which are much thicker, resulting in thin branches.
