Somewhere in Zion National Park in southwestern Utah, reddish and buff-colored buttes and cliffs of (mostly) Lower Jurassic (~180 million year old) Navajo Sandstone tower over green, scrub-covered slopes and deep valleys, all under a cloudless, light blue sky. The Navajo Sandstone is the remains of the largest sand-dune "sea" known in the world. Some of the buff-colored cliffs are streaked with dark desert varnish, which is an iron & manganese mineral stain thought to perhaps be precipitated out by bacteria living in the pore spaces in the sandstone during occasional moisture events. The darker red at the top of the butte in the left distance is the Middle Jurassic (~170 million year old) Temple Cap Formation, deposited on the coast of a shallow, inland (epeiric) sea that was beginning to encroach into this part of North America at this time.

A footpath through Wellacre Wood.

The path is bare brown dirt. The new leaves on the trees in the background and the undergrowth in the foreground is an intensely vivid green.

The trees in the background are tall, thin and densely planted, wavy dark lines amongst the greenery.

On the left a tree has five thin, dark trunks radiating from ground level. The light catches the bright orange algae encrusting one of the trunks. (I'm pretty sure it isn't a lichen.)

In the foreground thin black stems twist and turn against an emerald green background.
