Tech-washing / Google quietly building Trump's AI surveillance wall

Despite previous assurances from #Google Cloud CEO Thomas Kurian in 2020 that Google was "not working on any projects associated with immigration enforcement at the southern border," contract documents show Google is now central to a #CBP project upgrading video surveillance towers in #Arizona.

US trade war: EU prepares to retaliate with Big Tech in its sights.

France says a response from the EU to Trump's new 20% tariff will "probably" come at the end of the month. A government spokesperson told RTL that services will be targeted, not just goods, including from companies like Google and Apple.

With Meta, Amazon and Apple stock all down, the EU looks primed to twist the knife.

Big tech companies want total control but opt-out should be the way to go:

"OpenAI and Google have rejected the government’s preferred approach to solve the dispute about artificial intelligence and copyright.

In February almost every UK daily newspaper gave over its front page and website to a campaign to stop tech giants from exploiting the creative industries.

The government’s plan, which has prompted protests from leading figures in the arts, is to amend copyright law to allowdevelopers to train their AI models on publicly available content for commercial use without consent from rights holders, unless they opt out.

However, OpenAI has called for a broader copyright exemption for AI, rejecting the opt-out model."

I did it! Although it's still very rough & really not pretty, I got my spreadsheet with (> 900) verified accounts of media organizations in the #Fediverse away from #Google. The solution was #DataTables all along 👇🏼

➡️ fingolas.eu/fediverse/overview

Now I have to make it pretty (and correct some mistakes), but maybe someone can help me there? For example I know, that you can filter in #DataTables, but I couldn't get it working. Ideas?

My file is on GitHub (did I do it right?):

If you have a #google account and navigate to passwords.google.com you will be able to activate a "on-device-encryption" this option encrypts your #passwords before they are stored in the google password manager.

Yes, the google password manager apparently stores your passwords in clear text. This is kind of a #security nightmare.

And while you are on that settings page: You can also disable the use of the google password manager and export and maybe also delete your stored data.

' In 2020, Mr Black published a fake story claiming Cwmbran had been recognised by Guinness World Records for having the most roundabouts per square kilometre. Despite altering the wording of his article that afternoon, when he searched for it on 1 April he said he was 'shocked' and 'worried' to find the false information being used by Google's AI tool and presented as real information.'

Obviously, #Google (under order from the US government) could serve compromised “updates” at any time to individual users.

It would be technically possible to enable users to compare a “fingerprint” (hash) of security-critical plugins they are running, such as the one supporting Gmail’s #E2EE capability. If I can see I’m getting a different plugin for my OS/CPU to 99% of other users on the same platform, that’s a big warning sign. But I haven’t seen such software widely deployed (yet) 🧐
