Just finished reading "Careless People" by Sarah Wynn-Williams.

I wasn't a fan of Facebook before I read it but damn - Sarah describes a Facebook far more messed up and toxic than I could have ever imagined

The more we move our networks off Facebook, the less relevant they'll become - and the less damage they'll do in the longer term.

(I bought my copy from Kobo, but there's many other fine outlets that also carry it so go with what works for you - but avoid Amazon if you can - that's a whole other discussion)

And suddenly it's my turn with my public library's copy of #CarelessPeople and the sheer volume of the sound of all the red flags flapping is deafening!

""You dismantled the furnishing of a proper office to make it look like this? Like it is under construction?" One of the officials inquired, incredulous."

Fucking Facebook. Should have been strangled in the cradle.

I’ve started reading “Careless People” by Sarah Wynn-Williams, which is an insider account of earlier years at Facebook. My mind is boggled. Reminds me of why I hate the phrase “lean in”. It’s both a fast read and a painful read. Kind of like watching a crash in slow motion. You hope the bad stuff won’t happen, but you know it has, and that even worse stuff happens. It does start to illustrate how Zuckerberg got to the ring-kissing stage with 47. He gets high on power, and never wants to get off that high. #bookstodon #reading #CarelessPeople #fredagsbog

Just finished the book Meta doesn't want you to read: CARELESS PEOPLE by Sarah Wynn-WIlliams. I don't normally read tell all books but this one is worth a read. You can get through it quickly as it isn't a difficult read. But if you have friends and/or family that use Facebook and they are still capable of any kind of critical thought you should buy them a copy of the book. It's chilling.

Continued thread

I won't highlight any particular anecdotes from it and urge you to read it for yourself, but I will share this one sentence:

"Facebook does work for a beauty product company tracking when thirteen-to-seventeen-year-old girls delete selfies, so it can serve a beauty ad to them at that moment."

Despicable. Utterly despicable.

And then there's what they did in Myanmar. Or didn't do.

Careless People keeps on giving.

What the fuck is with billionaires wanting "a tribe of kids", with their packed schedules and "business optimizations"?

Build a god damned hospital or two. Use billions to deal with world hunger. Do not use women as breeding machines for the kids whose name you won't even remember or have time seeing and dedicating your time to.
