3,000-year-old Bronze Age daggers unearthed in a German cornfield Two well-preserved daggers from the Bronze Age have been discovered in a field in the municipality of Kutenholz, Lower Saxony, Germany. These over 3,000-year-old artifacts are among the earliest Bronze Age findings in the region. Their discovery has provided new insights into the ritual practices of ancient communities in the eastern part of Central Europe. The initial sign of the finding came in 2017 when metal detectorist Frank Hoferichter detected bronze pieces in the field. Researchers from the University of Hamburg have been conducting geomagnetic surveys of the field since 2023, allowing them to detect subterranean anomalies without digging. The surveys indicated the presence of large buried objects and therefore, the archaeologists dug further...

A mossy little stone in a big landscape for today's #StandingStoneSunday

Lower Neuadd standing stone in the upper reaches of the Taf valley. Further up towards the head of the valley is a group of Bronze Age ring cairns, and above that the highest Bronze Age cemetery in Southern Britain on the summits of Pen y Fan and Corn Du. The stone may have been a marker to point the way.

This visit on a day of sleety snow, April 2012.

A small grey standing stone capped with moss in an area of reedy grass in a valley. The stone is slim and tapering but barely reaches above the height of the grass. The valley slopes gently towards its bottom where a nascent river is unseen, the rises very steeply on the other side above dark conifers to a high mountain ridge. It's a grey day, dark and damp.

EurekAlert!New computer model reveals how Bronze Age Scandinavians could have crossed the seaPeople living in Bronze Age-era Denmark may have been able to travel to Norway directly over the open sea, according to a study published April 2, 2025, in the open-access journal PLOS One by Boel Bengtsson from the University of Gothenburg, Sweden, and colleagues. To complete this study, the research team developed a new computer modeling tool that could help other scientists better understand how ancient peoples traversed the sea.
