Sophia Basaldua-SunThis is going to be a little weird because it’s written for my much more developed and longstanding audience on instagram (many of whom have been with me for years), but I want to replicate what I’m doing over there so that folks know they can come here and find the same thing, so here it goes. Because my focus on this microblog has always been to re-engage with educating, I don’t often get into the details of how I create my visuals here. My goal is to create a visual that inspires a studious mindset, something that rehabilitates the idea of learning that we inherit from Western institutions, often as a rote and punitive practice. Learning is and can be a pleasure. So that’s what I aim to construct here. But I also know many of you are interested in the how of how I create, so I wanted to incorporate more of that, both to show you what I use and also to share some of the de-influencing behind it as well. Today I just wanted to highlight an ink I’ve been loving. I’ve been exploring the Filipino ink brand <a class="u-url mention" href="https://pixelfed.social/inksbyvinta" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">@inksbyvinta</a>, a company with a mission to support education. So, I’ve been buying ink samples of their inks and trying to decide what I want to add to my collection. A full bottle is a big commitment, which is why I’ve been testing samples first. A current favorite sample that I hope to add to my collection eventually is Pusan, this lovely, pale, color changing shimmer ink you see pictured. It has a beautiful silver shimmer and shades a more reddish purple with dark blues. I feel inspired when I break it out and much more driven to create, even though it is lighter than my usual inks. I treasure that sense of joy. Sophia Basaldua-SunLes Miserables, by Victor Hugo, is a 1400 page novel that defies description. Originally published in serial form, I read the Everyman’s edition, which described it as the story of Jean Valjean, and insofar as his story anchors the narrative throughout, that is an accurate description. But the novel is really epic in proportion, weaving many characters lives together while trying to capture the moment of revolution and the lead up to it. It is a deep reflection on society and humanity, starting from a reflection on the impact that those who act selflessly can have on the community around them, the corrupting rather than reformative power of the modern carceral system, how a cruel society creates the very people it identifies as aberrations. While its digressions can at times become tedious, the narrative overall is captivating, propulsive, and in terms of its social commentary, remains deeply relevant to our society today. Perhaps because, despite our striving, we remain in the modern era that Hugo wrote about. I’ll be spending the next two months on this momentous novel. Come along if you like. Sophia Basaldua-SunI’m sure you all have seen the TikTok debates about whether books are political or not. In the case of José Rizal and his body of work, his two novels were not only resoundingly political and anticolonial, but Rizal himself was executed by the Spanish colonial regime in the Philippines not because he was a part of the planning of the Philippine Revolution of 1896 (He was not), but because of his novels. The military claimed his novels had incited the revolution. Imagine being such a powerful storyteller that a corrupt state decides to execute Yu on the grounds that your novels moved people to action. That is the power of storytelling and literature. Of course, this story remains deeply resonant and relevant not only to the Philippines, but in the U.S., where efforts to ban books rage on, revealing how threatened some officials feel by the power of storytelling even as we’re told that studying literature is frivolous. Remember José Rizal, and take some comfort in knowing the power of words and the power of communication to effect change. There is undoubtedly more to be said about the relationship between the novel and the nation, but I’ll leave this month’s series at: I hope you’ll consider reading Rizal. <a Sophia Basaldua-SunWhat is disappearance? In short, it is a repressive tactic used by authoritarian states to terrorize the civilian population into submission. While the term “the disappeared” emerges in the aftermath of authoritarianism in Guatemala (1966) and Operation Condor in South America (perhaps most famously General Pinochet and his reign of terror in Chilean, but also juntas across South America including in Argentina), it describes a tactic that has long been in use and continues to be used by authoritarian regimes across the world, so it’s a concept to be aware of and understand. Disappearance is characterized by illegal abduction, secret detention centers, torture, death, and unofficial burial. Disappearance was, in theory, a way to avoid responsibility. The state maintained plausible deniability while effectively terrorizing their citizens into submission. The message is clear, you could be next. Sophia Basaldua-SunPen: Sailor Mini Ink: Vinta Inks Sirena Something that I really love doing that combines my love of reading and study with my love of stationery, pens, and ink, is copying out striking quotes from novels that I’m reading. I’ve always done this a little bit for my research, but it really reached a new level of just being something I do to engage with texts in a different way during the pandemic when I decided to read The Tale of Genji. Writing down lines that stood out to me provided a way to both document my reading experience and also let the style of the translation get into my body in a different way than the purely visual act of reading. Now I often recommend to people, if they’re looking for a simple step they can take to deepen their reading experience, try marking the passages that stand out to you, whether that’s with sticky tabs, a highlighter, or writing them in a quotes notebook. Over time you’ll begin to notice themes emerge in what draws your attention. And you get the pleasure of just spending a little extra time with lines that you love. I think it’s a nice, low pressure way to get a little more studious with what you’re reading while taking away the pressure of trying to identify what is important or what an expert would pay attention to. Sophia Basaldua-SunSomething about me? I love fountain pens. I write exclusively with them (except when I need to sign something because only fun inks not permanent black ink for me). Something I loved doing on Instagram has been participating in the fountain pen and journaling communities there. I learned so much of what I know about fountain pens through social media, including about Hobinichi (the planner brand pictured here) and bungubox (the pen brand pictured here). I learned about so many fountain pen inks that come in all of these incredible shades, and sheens from small brands across the world. I loved seeing all the creative ways people used their pens and inks from currently inked logs to the final touches on their junk journal spreads. It’s also really fun to see everyone’s different handwriting, their aesthetic sensibilities, and how those things brought their journals to life. So I hope that’s somrthing I’ll find here as well. Sophia Basaldua-SunHi there! Now that I’ve started populating my feed a bit I wanted to introduce myself! I’m Dr. Sophia Basaldua-Sun, a scholar of comparative literature turned publishing professional (I work in trade publishing now). As a way of keeping in touch with my academic roots I created an Instagram blog about canonical novels, research, learning, and lately a bit of travel content as well. I really love engaging with the book community, and especially with journaling, junk journaling, and creative journaling communities. Even though I’m more of a note taker than a journaler, I love observing and learning new ways of making my notebooks more visually interesting. So that’s a little about me!
