So one day a #research team was trying out a #telepresence #robot in the crowded hallways of my engineering building. (It was briefly blocked by onlookers, and I had to open a path for the robot to leave.) Apparently one of its potential uses, according to the person who surveyed my feedback, is allowing people who cannot physically attend events (like a conference) to still have social interactions with those physically present. Interesting goal, though it is pretty unnatural...

I'm a sociologist working at the intersection of cultural sociology, medical sociology, media studies, and STS.

I'm currently studying 'homebound' students and their use of telepresence robots in school (and digitalization processes in the public sector more generally). Theoretically, I'm pondering the relationship between interaction rituals and technology-mediated interaction
