Christy Marx Rambling Writer
Alt National Park Service ·

Wisconsin residents are receiving text messages from a (202) D.C. area code, falsely urging them not to vote in the upcoming election. These messages are not legitimate. Here is the last version of the text used in the presidential election: ‘WARNING: Violating WI Statutes 12.13 & 6.18 may result in fines up to $10,000 or 3.5 years in prison. Don’t vote in a state where you’re not eligible.’ Similar messages are circulating again now. These are scare tactics and are not legal in the United States. We’d like to request that these texts be investigated. We encourage all Americans to make their voices heard—your vote counts!

#MarxToot #uspolitics #Voting

Christy Marx Rambling Writer
After days of mild and pleasant weather, the local Chaos Weather God has visited snow upon us. Not a huge amount, but it’s still coming down. I was able to do errands this morning without a problem. I also have a vet appointment for Ozzy this afternoon, so hopefully I’ll be able to manage that, too. The forecast shows that it should be turning to rain. Christy Marx Rambling Writer
I profoundly hate this administration.

Cultural Organizations Protest Trump Efforts to Confine Speech for Federal Grantees

By Jim Milliot and John Maher | Feb 27, 2025

Seven free speech organizations—led by the National Coalition Against Censorship and including AICA International, Artists at Risk Connection, the Authors Guild, Dramatists Guild of America, Dramatists Legal Defense Fund, and PEN America—issued a statement this week expressing outrage at “the Trump Administration’s recent efforts to establish ideological control over federally-funded cultural initiatives in the United States.”

Recent changes in guidance from the National Endowment for the Arts and the National Endowment for the Humanities require applicants for federal grants to “comply with all applicable executive orders while the award is being administered.” The legal requirements laid out by the NEA prohibit organizations seeking funding from operating any programs dedicated to diversity, equity, and inclusion or promoting what the administration refers to as “gender ideology.”

An “assurance of compliance” included with the guidance states that the NEA “may conduct a review of your organization to ensure that the applicant is in compliance with these statutes, regulations, and executive orders.” It adds: “If the NEA determines that a recipient has failed to comply with any of these statutes, regulations, or executive orders, it may suspend or terminate the award, and/or recover the funds.”
The new guidance could have wide-ranging consequences for not-for-profit book publishers and authors who rely on the federal government for grants, although it has yet to be made clear how, precisely, the guidance will be implemented. In theory, any publisher releasing a book with a transgender character, for instance, would seemingly be ineligible for federal grant money under these new strictures.

The new guidance did not clarify which executive orders, precisely, were “applicable” to grantees outside of three specifically mentioned, all of which were related to DEI and LGBTQ+ initiatives. But its openendedness is a major concern for publishers; in theory, the new requirements could prohibit any publisher with a book in print using the words “Gulf of Mexico” in its text from receiving federal funding. Representatives of the NEA, contacted multiple times for clarification, have not responded to PW’s request for comment.

Shortly after the endowments updated their guidance for grant applicants, President Donald Trump fired many of the board members at the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts and installed himself as chairman. He declared that the center’s new leadership would share his “Vision for a Golden Age in Arts and Culture,” ensuring that its programming selections are “not going to be ‘woke.’ ”

The organizations that signed the NCAC statement warned that these moves “threaten to turn federally-funded institutions into tools of government propaganda, starving independent artistic expression and endangering democracy itself.”

“These efforts to make federally-funded arts programs the mouthpiece of the presidential administration should be concerning not just to artists, creatives, cultural organizations, and scholars, but to all Americans—regardless of where they fall on the political spectrum or their taste in art,” stated Elizabeth Larison, director of the arts and culture advocacy program at the NCAC. “A robust, free, independent cultural sphere is a hallmark of a democratic society, and the Trump Administration’s recent actions imply a desire to wrest control over culture.”

Though some of the Trump Administration’s anti-DEI efforts have been blocked by a court injunction, the new requirements about how to apply for NEA and NEH grants have caused widespread confusion. They represent a huge issue, in particular, for the Council of Literary Magazines and Publishers and its members, 60% of which are nonprofits; in the round of grants issued by the NEA for 2025, CLMP members were awarded 51 individual grants totaling $1,227,500. CLMP executive director Mary Gannon told PW that the organization “has been working as swiftly as possible to get more information and clarity around the NEA guidelines and compliance before the March 11 deadline,” which pertains to projects specifically for literary journals and independent presses.

CLMP is also the administrative lead for LitNet, a coalition of literary organizations across the U.S. that works to promote the importance of the literary arts in American culture, build the capacity of the literary field, and broaden funding for the literary arts. The organization is holding a virtual meeting for members on February 28, with attorneys from the Authors Guild set to share information and help applicants—to the extent that it is currently possible—understand what the guidelines mean.

https://www.publishersweekly.com/pw/by-topic/industry-news/publisher-news/article/97190-cultural-organizations-protest-trump-efforts-to-confine-speech-for-federal-grantees.html

#MarxToot #uspolitics

Christy Marx Rambling Writer
Here’s what I wrote:

I strongly object to this new section of requirements: Consistent with the E.O., the revised DS-11 will request the applicant's biological sex at birth, male “M” or female “F.” Amendments to the fields and instructions (section 3) have been made to reflect this.

It is wrong and shameful to misgender someone based upon biological assignment at birth. Biology is not the same as gender. And biology itself is not as simple as "female" or "male" as there is great variety in chromosome combinations and the existence of people who are intersex. Each individual has to live with the gender that is appropriate to who they are.

We should respect someone's CURRENT GENDER.

This requirement should be struck.

https://www.federalregister.gov/documents/2025/02/14/2025-02648/30-day-notice-of-proposed-information-collection-application-for-a-us-passport

#MarxToot

Christy Marx Rambling Writer
There was an update to Win11 last night. Today I noticed that the fucking annoying constant reminders to use OneDrive/Cloud back-up were back on my apps. I went looking for the way to get rid of it again only to discover I was in Clusterfuck City.

Microsoft suddenly decided I didn’t have a valid version of Win11 and wouldn’t activate it, which blocked me from making changes to the system. I wasted a good half an hour tracking down my license key and then stumbling down one blind alley after another to figure out how to fix the problem. They don’t make it easy. I finally found an option to change the license key. I tried that and entered my existing license key and magic! I’m back to having an activated version. Jesus, what a pain.

Then I spent more time finding the elusive OneDrive app and uninstalling it. Fucking Microsoft.

#MarxToot #software #Windows11

Christy Marx Rambling Writer
When I got to the grocery store late in the afternoon, I found a couple, a man and a woman, busking to one side of the store. She played a guitar and he played a ukelele and they sang as a duet.

Having gone a-busking myself, I know how tough it is. It’s not a heavily-trafficked area at all, so I was heartened by the number of people that went out of their way to give them money in the short time I watched.

I rarely have cash on me these days. I’d finished shopping, but I went back into the store, bought something inexpensive and got some cash back just so I could drop a fiver in their guitar case. Christy Marx Rambling Writer
I’ve been following the news of the measles outbreak, and how it’s spreading due to an excess of STUPID in the population. Unfortunately, children are paying a heavy price for their parents being fuckwits.

It also reminded me of a story by L. Ron Hubbard. Before he went all weird and cult-leader, Hubbard was a prolific SF writer. I read much of his early work from the 1940-1950s or so back in the 1970s. I remember enjoying his Old Doc Methuselah stories. Methuselah is a more or less immortal doctor in a future where humanity lives on worlds in more than one galaxy. I recall he had an alien sidekick that was devoted to him and whose body was somehow made of gypsum. He called him Hippocrates, iirc.

In one particular story, there was a serious outbreak of a virulent disease that was unknown to the future population. But Ole Doc, having been around for centuries or whatever, recognized it and saved the day.

It was measles.

Rather prescient, I think.

https://drrubin.substack.com/p/measles-outbreak-is-spreading-in

#MarxToot
