Weekend story share will be about how commiting to #decolonization of my mind involved destroying a lot of my early childhood beliefs & realizing how almost all of the 'cool people' I saw in big Hollywood movies had brainwashed me.
It involves the Indiana Jones movies.
Despite some disagreements over a few issues since the 70s - Vietnam, Laos & Cambodia peoples have retained close ties to this day. After Vietnamese helped Cambodians destroy Khmer Rouge genocide & extreme perversion of Maoist cult style of forced communism - US & their old Cold War BFFs, China - carried out a long bullying campaign against Cambodia because of Vietnamese helping them.
Vietnam helped Cambodia when no one else was stepping up against the USA bullies/geopolitical power games. US bullied other nations & the UN into sanctions. Effectively stopping humanitarian supplies from getting in. Vietnam sent many trucks of food & humanitarian supplies - despite suffering post US war invasion & under sanctions too.
My parents & our family there (in Vietnam) still remember donating rice, preserved vegetables & salted fish to help the Cambodians suffering.
Meeting up with a local Malaysian human rights activist friend this morning. I am going to help her compile some legal documents to assist a few political prisoners who are currently imprisoned without trial(or trial dates given) in #Malaysia. She fled her homelands with 2 family members due to being a targeted dissident & they've been living in Saanich for the past 8 years.
My #food delivery of curried noodles arrived. There's char sui pork & shrimps in it, with veggies & topped with sesame seeds. I've already eaten half of the container. I'm having it with a pint of Russell Brewing's Eastern Promises - a Czech pilsner brew(not pictured).
Made some of our family's Teochew #Cholon style, black pepper & soy braised pork with cucumbers & steamed rice. The braised sauce is great poured over rice & cucumbers. We are eating it with a small bowl of chicken pho flavoured broth soup with green onions, cilantro & bits of soft tofu(not pictured). Our family's #AsianBreakfast today

I LOVE Saigon Supersound albums
#SaigonSupersound releases Vietnamese music fused with elements of vintage western pop. This marriage of cultures results in unique, sophisticated sounds which transcend time and geographical boundaries to bridge east and west. The label started with two compilations that rediscovered gems from the so called “Golden Music” period in the south of Vietnam and soon began including new releases in the same vein. While considering the valuable heritage of Vietnamese popular music, the new releases are in the form of edits, re-works and remixes, as well as fresh compositions by upcoming artists which transport listeners from the past into the present. With this in mind, we are looking forward to developing new artists that share this common vision. The journey just started…let´s see where it will take us.
Made #ChineseCabbage & pork #soup for family dinner last night. We had it with rice & some stir fried tofu & flower mushrooms in garlic & oyster sauce(not pictured).
#SaigonSoulRevival has been on a quest to reawaken the raw, enchanting sounds of #1960s and #70s #Vietnam; a time when passionate music resonated in #Saigon's streets and clubs with messages of love, heartache, hope and freedom. Amongst the turmoil of war, there was a rich cultural climate that fused popular genres of the day like rock, soul and bolero with Vietnamese music and lyrics. This fusion of sounds that bridged east and west became forbidden after the fall of Saigon in 1975 and almost vanished. Four decades later Saigon Soul Revival was born with the initial purpose of bringing these dormant sounds back to the stage. After numerous live performances over the last 3 years, the band has developed their own sound and now, with the release of their debut album “Họa Âm Xưa”, they are ready to share it with the rest of the world. The 11 track LP, including original compositions and nostalgic reinterpretations, blends traditional Vietnamese elements with modern concepts, featuring pre ‘75 and current artists, all while remaining firmly rooted in the “nhạc vàng” (golden music) of the time. Meaning “Old Harmonies”, Saigon Soul Revival is proud to present “Họa Âm Xưa” as a tribute to the artists and composers of the time that inspired them to create this marriage between past and present.
My #MorningMusic choice, today
#SaigonSoulRevival returns with their second album, "Mối Lương Duyên".
New York based DJ & producer, #Nickodemus, head-honcho behind Wonderwheel recordings and one of the most important leaders of the global fusion dance community since the mid-90s, delivers the first remix from Saigon Soul Revival’s second album. Spicing up the opening title “Ai Thật Lòng Yêu Ai“ with his electronic trademark sound that is often focused on the connective tissue of live collaborations and the electronic solitude of his record-filled studio, Nickodemus is putting his own twist on the sultry soul groove.
What is the song about ?
This very soulful album opener „ Ai Thật Lòng Yêu Ai“ tells the story of a man who is deeply in love has his heart betrayed when he discovers his sweetheart is with another. Confused and crushed by despair, the man swears to himself that he will never forget the pain she caused him that day. He wishes never to see her again, in this life or the next.
Once again featuring Nguyễn Thị Hải Phượng on #ĐànTranh (Vietnamese 16-stringed #zither)

I'm heading back to Jubilee for client bed transfer to VGH, scheduled for early afternoon. I have to go to Burnside Gorge Community Assn. Centre for a meeting with their director, this morning. Hope to be back home by 3pm.
I cooked up some #eggs with #luffa gourds. Eating it with rice for a filling #ChineseBreakfast.
I used ridged luffa gourds because they were on sale. There's a smoother skin variety that's easier to peel. Both are cooked the same. I usually add prawns but we don't have any today.

Did you know? The #UnitedChurch once operated a home and school in #VictoriaBC for #Chinese and #Japanese girls and women. Today, many are surprised to learn this. Margery Hadley, a professional #archivist and member of #FirstMetropolitanUnitedChurch in Victoria, has recently completed a #digitization project that makes the images of the Oriental Home and School available online. It opens to us a now distant world and its concomitant issues.

#FirstMetArchives has been privileged to care for two important historical documents from the #OrientalHomeAndSchool. The first is the #ChineseRescueHome Advisory Committee minute book, 1896-1915. The second is the Oriental Home and School album, a fascinating assemblage of 95 photographs of the Oriental Home community, mainly between 1907 and 1916.
The Oriental Home and School album is now available online. It is part of First Met’s #historic #photographs digitization project that involved digital scanning and description of over 500 images from our #archival collections. These photographs are available to the public on #Flickr. The Oriental Home and School album is one of ten sets of First Met’s #HistoricalPhotographs available for public viewing.
First Met gratefully acknowledges the generous financial support of the #BritishColumbia #History #Digitization Program (2015), sponsored by the Irving K. Barber Learning Centre, #UBC.
