beige.party is one of the many independent Mastodon servers you can use to participate in the fediverse.
A home to friendly weirdos. The Grey Gardens of the Fediverse (but beige). Occasionally graphically cacographic. Definitely probably not a cult (though you'll never be 100% sure). Beige-bless 🙏

Them: We're forcing you to go back into the office because we believe work is more meaningful when employees are together and have a shared sense of comradery.

Me: So, unionize?

Them: No, not like that.

@theropologist “Hold up, we liked it when you were sharing and amplifying each other’s misery, not power…”

@theropologist

Also, no new HVAC systems to improve airflow, no masking, no guidelines on staying home when sick, or having negative COVID test before returning to work, etc.

There's no recognition at all that there's any risk of COVID for workers or students who have to gather indoors for many hours each day.

The selective amnesia is astounding.

@theropologist BINGO!
Every argument for RTO is an argument for unionization. Solidarity forever!
WFH increases morale, retention, and productivity. At the same time, it reduces costs and tightens schedule.
ANY CEO demanding RTO is incompetent and projects his/her incompetence upon their employees.
If I was an individual investor, RTO vs WFH would be right up there with performance history. I know they are going to tank.

@Ralph058 @theropologist
RTO is because they are getting pressured from REITS and all the investor class to stop devaluing office space.

@JoBlakely @theropologist
I'm sure that is some of it, but it doesn't explain companies owned by European non-profits such as the Zeppelin Trust.
It doesn't explain companies that are expanding and own the buildings they are in.
It doesn't explain how some such as Apple couldn't force suppliers to lease the ring from them to keep their contracts.

@Ralph058 @theropologist
Even if you own the property, the property value itself is part of their assets. Many ‘non-profits’ like think tanks and churches use property and its value as capital and power.
This is why churches don’t build low income or cooperative housing for poor.
It lowers property values to a fair market, not a hoarded, scarcity one.

I don’t know about Apple ring or what it is but that sounds illegal even now. I am guessing there was a lawsuit?

@Ralph058 @theropologist
I honestly don’t think many large companies care about their business or what they create or their workers. They care about the profits they can make, they care about the image they project as being in a different class. They care about what they can give to the investor class. Not to the world. They don’t care about that.
They are happy to just occupy workers in a kind of day care prison, give just enough to stop rioting & constraints to prevent competition or growth.

@theropologist Nothing boosts productivity like a 50 minute drive to sit in the smell of microwaved fish pie

@mousejiggler @theropologist
Hey man I said I was sorry about the fish and that was in 2018 can you leave it be?

@theropologist I'd literally nope companies if they forxe me into an offuce for no giod reason!

@theropologist @StaceyCornelius They won't even seat me and two colleagues next to each other — there's no space. Except the office is half empty even at peak times. It's bonkers.

@theropologist

Often on a Friday... I'm the only fucker in off my team

@theropologist nono you don’t get it /s the company is like a big family /s if you unionize, you risk destroying that comradery! /s /s /s

(I really want to emphasize the amount of sarcasm I’m saying this with, so please have 5 more sarcasm markers: /s /s /s /s /s)

@theropologist
Also Them: You have to be in the office at least three days a week, but we don't actually have enough seats for everyone to show up on the same day, so you can't have the entire team together.

@theropologist As someone who's been the victim more than once of malicious office politics, I'd like to say that the "cameraderie" is false and you're much safer at home.

@theropologist

That's what we did! Ironically, being in the office together did make it easier to chat people up about the union.

@theropologist @jcriecke yeah always has been. The only reason companies waste money is for the mastabatory habits of their executives. Otherwise they'd discharge that extra real estate so fast

@jcriecke @theropologist I did not know there was a further level my hatred for capitalism could achieve, and yet, here we are.

@jcriecke I'm not surprised at all. Crapitalism is toxic by design!

@theropologist

@theropologist mayors are trying to save fast food shops and business real estate tax dollars

@theropologist
This exact line, word for word, was told to me at my former workplace which was the reason why I clicked "send" on email to tell them goodbye.

@theropologist so, in-person work with my coworkers who work on the same thing as me?

No, alienation, isolation, and endless zoom calls — but you have to do it from the office.
