Happy International Women's Day! Just a reminder that Margaret Hamilton is a total badass and early innovator in the field of Software Engineering. Her pioneering work in task prioritization allowed the Apollo 11 moon landing to proceed even when the onboard computer became overwhelmed with too many tasks at a critical point in the mission. The software she wrote was flexible enough to ignore low priority tasks so that the computer could focus only on the tasks necessary for landing the LEM safely on the moon. Without her task prioritization routines in place, it's likely that the landing would have had to have been aborted.
@theropologist This is that good stuff!
@RickiTarr Don't get me started on Grace Hopper. Actually do, because she was a total badass too.
@theropologist She's the best!
@theropologist @RickiTarr
One of my dad's claims to fame is that he once briefly met Grace Hopper.
@theropologist @RickiTarr
Rear Admiral Grace Hopper!
"Margaret Hamilton is a total badass and early innovator in the field of Software Engineering"
If I recall correctly, she literally created the phrase "Software Engineer" to force respect from the other (mostly men) non-software engineers working with her. Both for herself, and her profession.
@atatassault I believe you're right. At the time the mostly male engineers were more interested in the big cool machines. Software was seen as mostly an afterthought to control the big cool machines. Hamilton proved that good engineering in software is just as important and as much of a serious discipline as mechanical and electrical engineering.
@theropologist All that and she commanded an army of winged monkeys too! Sorry.
