@purplepadma the fact you can even "buy" debt, let alone buy a million pounds of it for $100k suggests something is truly rotten with the current system. My current book is Debt by David Graeber and it's taking a long time because I have to take breaks because it's so distressing

@purplepadma I seem to have two very conflicting reactions to this. The first is that Michael Sheen is a legend and a national treasure. The second is the obscenity of the system that allows him to do something like this. I suppose it's a form of socioeconomic ju-jitsu?

@hedders @purplepadma well, it costs money to get people to pay you back. And if your debtors are especially poor and there's no reason to expect to get repaid, you can sell the debt off to someone else, so it's their problem.

It's basically also how incasso companies work.

But buying it at a rate of 10:1 ?

These people must be seriously screwed.
