Man on Radio 4 saying that benefits payments to disabled people are unsustainable and we must reduce them.

Me: OR… we could tax the super rich who aren’t struggling to afford therapy or a mobility scooter or a power wheelchair? All of which are extremely difficult or even impossible to obtain though NHS or social care routes.

Hashtag crazy dreamer

@purplepadma better disabled care would reduce the cost, because we could do fooking more, instead of our lives being stressed to feekin buggery by the system that is deliberatly obtuse and opaque.

Spoons not negotiating the bureaucracy could then be used for other things!

@purplepadma Benefits to disabled ppl are so fucking low they make utterly no difference to budget. Increase them 100 fold along with taxing billionaires out of existence.

@purplepadma Same fucking right wing willful innumeracy as avocado toast. 🤬

@purplepadma

I don't think it's a coincidence that just as Starmer started to look like he had a spine and Trump is using pretty much all the bandwidth for the next month, Labour slipped this nugget into the media stream.

But the benefits system could be revolutionised overnight just by incentivising those who can/want to into work, whilst protecting those who cannot, with zero additional cost. It's a deliberate choice to demonise recipients, at a time when if Labour want political capital and a loyal electorate, we literally have enemies at both gates. Why pick a fight internally? Quite apart from the performative cruelty and the utter betrayal of left-wing values, it makes no sense at all.

@purplepadma They always say stuff like "unsustainable" but they never sustain anything anyway. They wouldn't know a sustainable anything if it turned up on the high street waving balloons and playing trumpets with a big banner. They only cut and grab, and hope future consequences are future.

@purplepadma don't tell anyone but money is just numbers, and police.

@purplepadma If they want more people able to work they need to fix healthcare, socialcare, housing, transport and disability rights in general. Otherwise it's just Catch22 and putting disabled people into poverty and leaving us there.

@purplepadma I heard a guy on LBC, I forget his name but he's a labour doner and he's successfully sued The Daily Mail and Guido Fawkes website, so he sounds alright.

Anyway, he wishes they would tax the rich as well. If I remember correctly, 2% tax on the richest, it would only affect just under 24,000 people but bring in just over £20bn to the government.

The thing is, lots of these people are saying, do it! We're ok with it.
