@riversidebryan I would rather have a 'agree with this post" kind of 'favorite' button instead. That makes it clearer that not only do I like the post, but also the premise behind it. "Disagree" is not a recommended button because trolls would sink the post. But for right now, "favorite' is the same idea of "I love this! I agree with this!"
@fmhilton @riversidebryan@hugs.lgbt @isotope239 I want a “I hear you” button for when people express something sad which you don’t want to favourite because it’s not something you can “like” but you want to acknowledge them
@purplepadma @fmhilton @riversidebryan @isotope239 Some Fedi software other than Mastodon has emoji reactions.
I see you’re on #Mastodon. I’m using #Akkoma. I’ve just given your message a thumbs-up #reaction. I’d be interested to know how Mastodon shows that (if at all).
@nddev @purplepadma @riversidebryan @fmhilton I see the hashtag #reaction but no thumbs-up emoji?
@nddev @purplepadma @riversidebryan @isotope239 @fmhilton Nadda (mastodon via elk):

Thanks for the screenshot. It doesn’t look as if my thumbs-up reaction has shown up at all.
I didn’t know Mastodon supported emoji reactions. I stand corrected!
I added the hash in front of “reaction” myself; that’s not Mastodon trying to show that a reaction exists. Apologies for the confusion.

That is how I use the "like" button now (meaning it's used for I hear/see/support you more than agree with), and I think most of the circle of people I interact with do the same.
That's not to say a more explicit signal may not be an improvement, as long as it's done well.
(I of course will not guarantee there are not different subcultures/meanings.)
