Today I saw a beautiful thing happen that tech made possible: a woman came in to the imaging center and presented paperwork which was actually for the medical office around the corner at the back of the building. She spoke only Spanish and none of us knew how to adequately explain this in Spanish.

The woman checking me in dropped everything and opened her phone translation app which speaks the message you type into another language. She was able not only to help direct the patient to the correct location, but also told her what floor she needed, and that she would personally call the doctor and let them know that she was on her way.

@kimlockhartga Nice! Those translation apps are great, aren’t they? We once had a kiddo visiting while his caregiver at the time (I’m not entirely sure how the relationships all worked out) was running some errands. I didn’t find out until the last few minutes that he spoke virtually *no* English. We needed to tell him to quit throwing things. If it wasn’t for Google Translateeawe never would have been able to get the point across.

@Tarrenvane @kimlockhartga @EllenInEdmonton @Nonya_Bidniss @akamran which app do you each prefer? i've heard of these but don't know the names of any. are some better for certain languages than others?

@rothko @Tarrenvane @kimlockhartga @EllenInEdmonton @Nonya_Bidniss I was using Google translate. I sometimes use monocles translate (from F-Droid), but it's only got a few languages- missing both Greek and Turkish, for example.

At the time, I think that Google Translate was the only one available but I've since found apps that are much better for specific languages. Papago (Naver) is the translator of choice for #Korean

@kimlockhartga Thanks for that. It's nice to hear a tech story that isn't all about how technology is evil and ruins everything. Goes to show, it not the tool, it's how you use it

@kimlockhartga
I had SUCH a fun night in a Chiang Mai hostel, thanks to a couple of tall boys of Chang and Leo beer and the translator app. This guy and I spoke for an hour, only using the app! He was visiting from China and had some English but not enough to comfortably converse. I only have hello and thank you in Chinese.

@EllenInEdmonton this is wonderful! With the right tech, we can knock a few bricks off of the Tower of Babel.

@kimlockhartga This is exactly how my daughter managed when she was sent on short trips to Poland and Romania for work.

@kimlockhartga Love little tech wins like this. I'm a native English speaker and once I was at a small grocery/restaurant and wanted to buy an ingredient for a dish I only knew the Greek name for. The proprietor, who only spoke Turkish, and I used an app to translate among the three languages. Took us a couple of minutes, but it worked!
