Dear Friends Strangers and everyone in between,
I’m sorry this took so long but we had to get approvals from both facilities.

gofundme.com/f/project-asher

I was once told that if you truly need help you need only ask. So humbly I ask you at least read our ask for help below and at least perhaps help us get the word out.

We will post updates now.

I’m sorry it took so long but this stuff isn’t easy to do and it’s taking all my energy to even attempt this.

Fedi if you can do your thing please. If not for us for Asher. I can check and see if you can donate directly to Cornell or . If you prefer and dm me.
On any account or any questions just ask!
Thank you
Derek Jolene and Barbara.

I’m editing the alt text for pictures now but I have to hit send because we are packing.

Last week Asher our Furbaby had a bowel obstruction. He came to us as a stray who followed us home from a few blocks away.

His conditioned improved at first when the blockage was resolved. However, by early Monday  morning, he declined dramatically.

We decided to take him to our vet once he opened that day as we were afraid that the stress from the long journey to the emergency vet might worsen his condition.

Yesterday, we found out he was lucky to be alive and his kidneys are shutting down.

Our vet has him semi stabilized now, and recommended a referral to Cornell veterinary hospital where they have specialists who hope to improve his prognosis. Since he’s only 3 years old, all members involved hope to give him the best shot at life.

Getting him stabilized so far is estimated to be 1000+ and the estimate for Cornell ranges between 1500-4500 conservatively. They are unable to provide a more accurate estimate until he has been evaluated.

I have helped others before to fundraise for their companions fundraising and we try to help with outreach in our community in terms of cat rescue, TNR, and finding affordable care. However, we have never had to ask for help ourselves in this regard.

While it’s difficult for us to ask for help, we realize it was the only way to save him. Although some may view him as just a cat or pet, he is so much more to us. Besides being a housemate, he is also a friend, companion, and teacher. We would give him our kidneys if we could.

That said, I know many are struggling as well. I have boosted and donated, but I never did it expecting anything back. I did it because we both believe we are in this together.

So if you can please send Asher your best vibes. Your best boosts.
My partner and I will keep you updated.

We do have Vet references, estimates, drivers license, etc, this is not a scam.

If you can donate, that would be great. No amount is too little, every penny makes a difference. We appreciate every kind thought or prayer at this point.

Thank you all in advance. We don’t have a lot of time. Whether we meet the goal or not, we will do our best to keep fighting for him.

Thank You,
Derek & Jolene & Barbara

Update:These alt text are fixed now thank you for all the boosts thoughts and donations. I’m sorry I haven’t been updating more. We should get updates on him tmr sometime and see if we can find a smoother quieter ride to NY and find out if he can even travel because it does stress him so. If there’s any questions just let us know.
Thank you again for at least giving him a chance and us the privilege of getting to share that time with him.
🥰

#Humility #Kindness #thankyou #ProjectAsher

@everyday_human
Here’s a picture with me and Dr Shepard and Asher. Saying goodbye onto be examined up north. Cornell is really cool because they work with your local vet and do community outreach.
Thank you everyone!

@EVDHmn I’m mostly managing mastodon and partially doing updates trying to get the word out and thank yous and tell you more about Asher . While trying to let Asher rest well. We are going to camp beside him as he rests I think.

I don’t know if any of you have done this before and we are soo sooo very 🥹. Grateful and appreciative.

If you want I think I wrote a story about him. Thanks to him I learned to meditate. I think I wrote a story about that somewhere . I’m not to sure where I wrote that so this is an actual true story about he and I 🤗.
Sorry if my spelling and grammar are horrible.

I was making soy tea and milk tea mix it was late. Asher came up to me like he really wanted my attention not just for petting it seemed. So I followed him to the dark corner of the room at 2 am he layed down. I thought well maybe he wants me to hang out. I was reading cat psychology then. He was feral aggressive.
He attacked out of fear. So after we worked with him for about a year he turned into the best teddy bear ever. He loves kisses.

So anyhow back to the story. I sit down beside him. (I think well I wonder what he sees out there in the darkness? what it looks like to him?🙄. He immediately started this loud purring when I sat down.

I didn’t touch him we just sat and looked into the darkness. I looked up before how cats eyes specifically work and how much less light they have to be able to see it’s vastly less.

Also they have near and far sight separated. When the slits go up and down it’s for distance generally wide eye is supprise or close up, they all have different vision just like we all can see and hear at a somewhat different frame or hear at slightly different frequencies that tend to be within a range, at least perhaps that could be, I could be wrong.

So as we both stared on into the darkness I had nothing to do but imagine what it must be like and I was so relaxed imagining that in my mind and Asher purring I meditated for the first time for two hours in silence with Asher purring beside me.

I have been able to meditate ever since. So when I say he’s also my teacher, he is. I hope you enjoyed the story. It’s very true. I’m sure I have when it happened somewhere because it was so profound for me.
I don’t know how or why? I’m not claiming to claim causality all from Asher but he played a big role for sure.

I also thought in that strange moment, do they experience sensory quicker or time faster? I’ve never tried to answer that yet.

@everyday_human Asher is feeling better very affectionate. So happy to be home with us. The doctor was unsure what specifically caused it and suspected acute vs possibly turned to chronic by some biological reason even if his numbers return there’s still the infection systemically that could have contributed. We are signing off for the night to rest.

he seems to want to cuddle he’s cries like a lost kitten if we leave his sight. Good night and thank you all. Much love

@EVDHmn
Update to
Arrived at Pittsburgh
Wish Asher Luck.
Will update when we know something.

@everyday_human@beige.party @EVDHmn

they just triaged him from a referral from our vet. The kind person who took him back was Laura .

I didn’t tell you on the way here part of my cars undercarriage blew off in severe windstorm we went through I had to wire it with speaker wire. I’ll show you pictures. I couldn’t take pictures on the interstate while I was trying to wire it.
However we made it to our destination. I believe it’s called blue pearl formerly known as pvsec…Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

update:

So yesterday. We took Asher to the vet,

vet said:
They are fully blocked the bladder is twice the size of a walnut and firm to the feel.

We said:
we know that’s why we are here to confirm.
What’s the best course of action given the circumstances.

Vet said: Well the only thing I can do is cath and unblock him but he most likely will need a pu surgery.

Here a link: It explains the procedure fairly well.

petsoverload.com/what-is-a-per

So then we asked:
We have already called around to see what can be done with him?
Vet: I only recommended three sources.
Fairmont, Cheat lake and Pvsc(Now known as Blue Pearl)
Us:
Cheat lake wasn’t taking any new patients when we called.

Fairmont is vet he recommended was a week out

Blue Pearl seems like the only option.

“We asked the vet to send records and we decided we would have to brave the hour and 30minutes car drive and be seen at pvsec”

Asher was spasming keep in mind about every 5-10 minutes and pretty miserable with pain and they didn’t give him anything for it.
I tried to take all the main roads to get there to make his drive less curvy.

To top it all off we were scared as hell.
Here we are going to an emergency vet and having him go to a procedure not knowing if he’s going to go into some kind of internal stress shock while we travel l.
Something like interstitial cystitis.
Only on a total body systemic scale.

So yeah we were catastrophically playing out scenarios but since this seemed like the only option at a shot at normal life for Asher and hopefully not have the condition reoccur.

On the way we encountered a huge storm going through a pass and the wind picked up and somehow blew away part of my undercarriage. This was a P.A. State road with no pullover spots so much

Picture is below. I grabbed some speaker wire out of the back of the car and wired it cross tied securely as I could and continued the following miles.

We were 20 miles out then and definitely worried every bump.

We were worried my other stuff would fall down and hit the ground and we were an hour a half away from home so it was a concern it was getting late.

I posted when I was at pvsec(blue pearl)
They wanted 6k upfront to do the surgery. All the staff was professional and great
We just couldn’t afford it. I thought 😥. For a few moments I gave up.

As soon as I did.

We went outside to talk.

We thought to recall the other 24 hour emergency place to see if they could work with us and they did.
Cheat lake Animal Hospital🥹.

They wanted 10x less deposit with half the price from a qualified surgeon who does this frequently successfully.
They happen to be two hours away so we did that.

Another long drive Asher’s picture there is in the preceding post.

I talked to them this morning and getting ready to call and talk to them now Asher has been great. It seems he has a following of sorts now.

From just these three experiences I have learned the people that work in these organizations have good intentions.

However like us all they have to conform to the standards that are set for them professionally.

I’ve met so many caring people many people that were super cool and some happen to be obviously neurodivergent as well.

We are so grateful and thank you everyone who has donated shared or boosted

We couldn’t have afforded this and we would have probably not been able to help him as much and we appreciate the world of you who did or said a prayer or kind thought about Asher.

We are starting a second round of trying to hit a little closer to our goal and thank all of you who have donated and shared and boosted as said before.

I’ll still update , I know people care, I know some of you worry about him but know we are doing the best we can.

It sucks not to be able to help a loved member of the family to doctor because you are too poor to deserve help in a merit based way.

That’s what it felt like too us and really made us realize how fragile things can change and turn in a positive or negative way.

Sometimes I guess it’s how you respond or show up to life, 🤷‍♀️.

It’s much harder to go through these things period, let alone blogging about them to the world.
It’s a comfort to know how many care and share and we are sincerely grateful .
I mentioned earlier if it makes anyone feel more comfortable they can donate to Asher’s surgery directly.

In closing this update I still have to add images from the vets.
Which I will do for here and go fund me.

I learned even more try to cherish every moment with love ones. Try to be in that moment and live it, appreciate it, you never know when it will change🥰.

Have a great rest of the day!
