Did you know that "opleiden" in Dutch means "supposed to be a Fenian outrage"?

excerpt from a telegraph book that uses code words to replace entire phrases, such as "terrible outrage", "fenian outrage", "niilist", "socialist", etc. The words had to be pronouncable, so they often borrowed from other languages.

Since it comes up all the time in normal conversations, Dutch also has a single word that means "If ordered from port of call to the Continent, 6d. extra per quarter grain or seed, and 3/6 extra per ton tallow for stowage goods".

How frequent were problems with the captain?

list of code words for telegraphs that include "captain is dead", "captain fell overboard but is too till to give any information", "arrived with captain under restraint, apparently insane" and 'captain is insane"

Problems with captains might not have been that common, but merchants' and financiers' worries about their cargo/investment being lost were what drove the content of the code book
