A home to friendly weirdos. The Grey Gardens of the Fediverse (but beige). Occasionally graphically cacographic. Definitely probably not a cult (though you'll never be 100% sure). Beige-bless 🙏

Ritual? I’ve become a coffee connoisseur (at least in my eyes) over the last 5 months since I began using a stovetop percolator. for keeping your stainless steel pot and parts clean, no coffee oil stains.

Let’s say this photo is a still life study. Forgot to finish cleaning the percolator and parts last night after letting it soak with the pot full of water, parts inside, with 1 tablespoon of baking soda.

In the morning I scrub all with a mix of my 3 favorite dishwashing accessories: fine nail brush for delicate areas, sturdy brush with medium-soft bristles and a mesh net nylon cloth cut in smaller pieces. It’s all still super clean and shiny 5 months out from daily use brewing coffee from fresh ground beans.

A couple more tips in comments. And please do add your tips of any sort here. Nice to initiate this hashtag in top of post. I had it
going over a year in my old instance. And these .

My cleaning tips for this coffee pot: rotate daily cleaning with one of these:
Soak for 2 or more hours 1 tbsp baking soda with hot water
Or
Soak with 1 tsp sodium percarbonate as above
Or
Use Dawn Powerwash spray soap on inner parts for a half hour then rinse with very hot water and wash as usual with the other household dishes
Or
A couple times a week just scrub lightly on the filter basket and then wash all parts with regular sink of dishes
Or
Lay the parts out to wash in the dishwasher. Not the pot though.

Does all this matter? Oh my, it does! Coffee tastes better from a clean pot. And it is a small pleasure to have a little tiny ritual that rewards my heart with shining glow. Seriously, with all the chaos going on in the US daily and sometimes hourly, my coffee making rituals help me center.

@cobalt123 That's amazing. We had a percolater and my parents would let me make the coffee, standing on a kitchen chair 😆 I loved the sound

@sunumbral Great memory! I’m now 73 but remember so well the sound of the percolator brewing in the farmhouse with mist pervasive aroma. I wonder if you can get the lift of caffeine from just smelling it when brewing.

@sunumbral Ooooh, fascinating! Also it was good to read of other experiments and use of fragrances, and essential oils. We use the essential oils about 3-4 times a week for my son. They help him relax and help the room smell better.
